music server for car

Wonder if anyone can suggest something here. I had a big idea to use a new Ipod with lossless compression but having got the 6th generation classic ipod with 80gig I was so underwhelmed with the sound it has had to go back.

I read around and apparently Apple have had many complaints about sound on these Ipods. The sound I would describe as thin, flat and irritating to listen to even when piped into a nait2 for testing (to make sure it was not the headphones)... anyway I digress....

What I am after is a top sounding unit that will store say 150CDs lossless in the car. It would be cool if the unit had wifi so I can just drop stuff on from my local network.

Any ideas would be appreciated or indeed if anyone has experience with good sounding mp3 players...

Happy Boxing day!

I wonder if you have done the minimum necessary to make the ipod sound fantastic? I have never had an issue with the sound within the confines of a cheap MP3 device which it is.

Firstly. Did you try it in the nait two through an iPOd dock? If you outputted via the headphones socket then it won't be great, from a dock you get Line Level input just like your CD player.

secondly did you switch off crossfade, sound enhancer and sound check in the preferences? This will pass over to the iPod.

Did you switch off EQ in the iPod as well?

Once you have done all this, feedback. Yes there will be complaints about iPod sound quality, however to date around 100,000,000 ipods have been sold, even 100,000 complaints is pretty low.

You could always try and get your hands on one of these. Ebay is a good place. This was the EMPEG in car MP3 player, does FLAC for your lossless compression.

thanks chaps, garyi I had no idea you could get sound out lineout through the bottom, so yes it was via a headphone jack. EQ was off, did not see or know anything about crossfade. oh well its a bit late its already gone back.

from what I have been reading though the sound of the new version 6 classic is thought inferior to the 5. My nephew had a 5 and I found it quite surprisingly listenable hence my venture to get one for myself.

Steve thanks, will do some research on that looks good.

Happy New Year
