HDX random shut downs

Posted by: wheely on 26 January 2009

I purchased the Naim HDX in November from my local dealer (Soundcraft Hifi), after about 4 weeks I had the odd random shutting down with the naim logo coming up and states “please wait”. Things got worse on the 16th January when playing an album track the hdx sounded like a stuck track repeating the same piece of music (like a scratch record) again and again. After this the HDX would not start up, all I got was a naim logo and “please wait” flashing on and off. I left the unit all night and in the morning still the same screen so i phoned my local dealer and they told me to bring it in, which i did. After they had it for a full week i finally received a phone call from my dealer stating it was fixed (i phoned a few times to find out whats happening) they got a zip file or something and rebuilt the database. The random shut downs have started again today, has any one else had this problem?

Should not happen. Needs to go to Salisbury.

Your dealer needs to talk to me and then spend about half an hour with your HDX - it does sound like the music database is getting corrupted somehow, you may possibly be powering it down whilst it is busy and its not managing to clear all its caches in time before it closes down.

We have a tool to rebuild the corrupted database and then an updated service pack (SP9) for the HDX (and NS0x NaimNet servers) which should fix that issue - your dealer should be able to do both.

Cheers

Thankyou both for your help, last night at 10.40 when it was playing a Bonjovi album and the HDX started it again but slightly different. Flashing between the playing screen and the naim logo “please wait” screen every second or so, back to my dealer i think. Here is the info from Naim DTC if that helps,

System Version=1.4b sp8
Playback Service=2.1.232
Player=2.0.1.9
Utility Service=3.0.4.27
Ripping Service=2.0.209
Encoding Service=2.0.111
FTP Download=1.0.29
Automated Upgrade=Unknown
Soap Messaging Client= 1.0.73
DigFi Client Services Component=2.0.44
Utility Component=1.0.13
DigFi Status Component=2.0.0.10
Thank again.....

As regards the SP9 service pack, is this a necessity for all HDXs and if so how do we get this update. My HDX arrived early December. The only problem is that occasionally it reacts slowly to the handset but will later react normally.

Hi Wheely

I have had the same problem. First my unit failed 5 times in 2 weeks with a message about not seeing the analogue output board, them a week later it started with the please wait message. It is at the distributor in Montreal and I should hear what they have found tomorrow. I will let you know what they say.

Cheers

Hi Manu

Hope all is well. I miss the HDX, but the Superline is keeping me very entertained.

Bob,
It has been released from intensive care on Friday night. It is on monitored recovery since then and should be sent back home on Wednesday.

Nothing lost on disk, updated to latest firmware (SP9, just released).

Hi Manu

I just sent Jon and Pat the info on the SP9 release, glad your right on top of this. Was the firmware update all that was required or was there a component problem?

Cheers

Hi Wheely

The problem on my unit was :

The issue was a loose analogue ribbon connector. The os was also corrupted...all is good now

The OS is indeed windoze but it was not the problem, but the music database.

So we have re-ripped your 255 cds one by one. Some have been difficult to find but we do miracles... Big Grin Big Grin

The above doesn't quite read correctly. This is fantastic service from Naim, not so sure about the product!!!

In fact the HDX is quite reliable, that's why I can do jokes on it.
We have seen very few issues given the complexity of the technology involved. And Naim is quite prompt to respond to the software bugs. Winker

Yes, November and December have been very good for it.
It is slower now, but it is normal at this time of the year.

Call me dim, but why are the hard-drives so small in the HDX? Looking at friends' CD collections: most listeners will fill 400 Gb and are going to need external storage.
Whereas, a pair of 2 Tb HDs would do for most people that I know, so it could be "fit and forget", which I think is the main point of the HDX.

I think I recall Naim claim that the "noise" from other hard disc drives compomised the sound. There will always be a limit at some stage with a stand alone, connections to external hard drives will at a later date be based on Naims Recommendations based on listening trials.

Hi David

Good point. Also higher capacity disks would have raised the price, then people would complain about that. I think a lot of people are so focused on the technology (Naim should have done this or that instead)that they miss the real point - the HDX is an audio component and a very good one at its price point (its about the music). I was not on the forum when the 500 series came out, was there a lot of Naim should have used different transistors or similar stuff?

Cheers

Bob
