Atmospheric optics => Nacreous clouds !!!
Posted by: DIL on 22 December 2006
Taken last night about 1.5 hours after sunset. Not sure if these were iridescent clouds or (more probably) nacreous clouds, but pretty impressive all the same!

Thanks

Turns out they were nacreous clouds as it was well after sunset and the sun was about 5deg below the horizon. The pictures really don't do justice to what I saw.
The technical stuff: - Tripod mounted Olympus E300 with 14-45 Zoom set at it's widest (28mm equivalent). ISO set manually to ISO200 (Olympus not renound for low noise at high ISO's) and used the camera autofocus and auto exposure (P mode) which gave 1/25th at F4.4 (Image below which shows a bit more detail in the clouds was taken at 140mm equivalent and 1/50th at F3.9.)
The image(s) were stored as RAW and 'developed' using Phase One's Capture One LE (1st time using the software) where I adjusted white balance to give the colour rendition I remember. I also lightened the image very slightly, boosted shadow detail (Probably explains the noisy sky) and increased the colour saturation a bit. Output as high quality jpg.
If doing this again I would have used the self timer / remote and a smaller apature and longer exposure in order to limit the effects of Camera shake and the fact that the lens is a bit soft at wide apatures.
