When did first get music?

When did you start to start to go beyond your parents musical expectation? My daughter (13) has just spent her birthday money on the Libertines back catalog. Where did you start?

My first two 45 records were Stealers Wheel - Star, and Medicine Head - Slip and Slide. My first two LP's were America Pie (Don Mclean) and Night Train by Oscar Peterson.

I grew up with two older brothers who played music all the time through the seventies which ranged from Bowie to Laurie Anderson. So when I went to secondary school in 1981 I was given a couple of tapes made by a colleague of my Mum that had early Hip Hop and Electro with a bit of Jazz Funk on them, I have a lot to thank him for steering me away from mainstream pop music. So the first 12" I bought myself was one of the founding fathers of Hip Hop and an all time classic Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force - Planet Rock (still got it) and the first album which is in my first desert island selection was Newcleus - Jam On Revenge, pure fantastic Electro Funk.

Great post BTW - fascinating reading indeed - there is a lot of great music of all types.

Most kind - thank you - but: who is Shirley Collins? I know I could do a Google search but I shall await an answer.

Shirley Collins is the queen of English folk music - the 60s folk revival was largely down to her efforts and as a singer she's a purest.

Here is a thread on Shirley

and

here's another one

Shirley has her own web site at http://www.shirleycollins.co.uk/.

Her wiki entry is here

All of her albums have great merit for anybody interested in folk music - the ones I would always recommend are Anthems In Eden, No Roses and the superb Folk Roots, New Roots.

Shirley Elizabeth Collins MBE is now 72 years old and doesn't sing any more, but she does give talks about folk music in and around her home in Sussex.
