What are DSD CDs?

I often see DSD CDs for sale. These are Japanese imports and I am wondering whether, as a rule of thumb, there is any advtange to these discs over their European and American counterparts. If they are like SHM CDs then they are probably heavily compressed and likely to sound poor in comarison. I notice that many of the Miles Davis albums are issued as Japanese DSD CDs. Perhaps MilesSmiles would comment on how good these discs sound.

With thanks

Thanks Munch. So they are SACDs. When I bought my very modest surround system I bought a few SACDs and DVD-A discs. I always wished that I could hear them on my Naim system. I am now able to listen to rips of my DVD-As through the DAC but I just can't be bothered to go through all the hassle of extracting audio from an SACD.
