~<>~ Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) ~<>~

Gurrelieder

Berliner Philharmoniker

Sir Simon Rattle

Karita Mattila ~ soprano
Anne Sofie von Otter ~ mezzo-soprano
Thomas Moser ~ tenor
Philip Langridge ~ tenor
Thomas Quasthoff ~ bass-baritone

I'm very glad it's sung in German, i hate to know what's going on and it allways sounds much worse for it when sung in English.
This 2cd set, a lend from a friend... i need more time for this really, and to be in the mood. The musik is very calm and beautiful at times but much of the singing is quite loud and rowdy... there is something going on that's for sure! : )

So good to have it back, especially as there will be no more 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue'.

I just don't understand why 'The Now Show' keeps going.

And in the CD player now it has finished, a Peter Hammill live show from 1996.

I have had the privelege to be at a concert of Rattle leading the CBSO in this work. It is the only time that I walked out of a concert during the music. I sat in the bar and had a beer in time for the next train back to Worcester.

Rattle had no idea how to balance an orchestra with solo singers. It would not have mattered whether they were in English or German as they were completely inaudible. This demonstrates an ill-formed idea of what music and, in this case, being the accompanist, is all about.

My view of Rattle, the musician, became rather uncharitable after that. I was already struggling with him as a human being, but no doubt the BPO will have taken the rough edges off him somewhat. It seems they are soon to hold an early general meeting to see if the consensus is that he should be asked to leave early, or run until his contract runs out. I am not surprised by this. Important people are already leaving the orchestra in a sad flow. One must hope that the BPO will recover from the Rattle era ...

The Only Schoenberg I actually like is the "Transfigured Night," but I am not over fond of late romantic music and struggle with serialism ...
