Dear Florestan,

I put a really considered reply on the Music and Archicture thread to your post asking for such.

I hope you read it as it is no longer quite where that thread has gone!

Chausson's Concert in D major op. 21 for piano, violin and string quartet and the Piano Quartet in A major, Op. 30.

The slow movement in the Concert in D major, marked Grave, is simply one of the most breathtaking slow movements imaginable - very sombre and even tragic. It is generally a battle between the forces pulling one downward (to the underworld) or upward (heavenward) and this is simply accomplished by the tension of the musical line going downward or upward and against each other. I am not sure who wins out here but this is remarkable music none the less.
