Variations on the cello - discs of music from Marais (Hille Perl), Kodály (Janos Starker) and Britten (Ophélie Gaillard). Too tired to find the pictures.

It is other people's music since it left me cold.

Beth Nielsen Chapman's Greatest Hits. We saw her when she opened for Kris Kristofferson recently and she bowled us over. "All I Have" is one of the most affecting love songs ever written.

Still Furtwangler in Salzburg for Figaro. Still in German. Well, almost, some Italian sneaks in for "Canzonetta sull'aria", but not all of it. Downright bizarre. And yet so organic is the reading it doesn't stick out like the sore thumb it by all rights should.
Beautifully sung by Schwarzkopf and Seefried.

In recordings by Klemperer and Furtwangler, Beethoven speaks to the infinite. In these live recordings by Mackerras, Beethoven speaks directly to you.
If Klemperer takes you on a deep sea dive, and Kleiber on a cruise down the rapids, Mackerras throws a bucket of water at your face. You'll want to scream. I think Beethoven would have loved it.

Larry

You should have been at the performances!
That said, great though these recordings are, I don't think they've quite done the concerts justice - the sound is harsh and the balance doesn't bring out the winds in the way he did in the concert hall.
The other interesting thing is they've chosen to release them in numeric order rather than concert order (where the smaller works were dispersed between the larger ones to ease rehearsal) but which showed fascinating connections.

Dear tam,
If the Flute went well, and Figaro has so invited you, then you will certainly be taken with Giovanni [with Tito Gobbi]. Those were heady days in Salzburg, and Furtwangler was indeed the mature man to lead the performances! I am so pleased they appeal. Then consider the depth in Fidelio and Frieschuts!
