Sounds even better with its new autographed sleeve - the great man himself has obliged - no not Elvis or Bob Dylan, but someone far more important in the history of music, as far as yours truly is concerned - the amazing Mr Nigel Blackwell (it doesn't get any better).

Dipping into (thanks, iTunes...)
Jessica Gall (Imagine) - pretty good, might purchase
Ralph Towner (Short 'n Stout) - Variations on known themes
Gary Burton / Keith Jarrett (Moonchild)
Norma Winstone (Shall We Dance ?)
Paolo Fresu / Uri Caine (Solar) - Must have it. Ordered.
[em] 3 - Ordered
Bennett / k.d. Lang (Dream a Little Dream)

Now, that's my usage of iTunes: download samples of what I'm interested in to eventually buy, burn that onto a CD, play it on the system, and make a decision. Sometimes those tracks only land on car CD's sometimes I buy the whole (regular) album.

Fair enough ?

The Pine Valley Cosmonauts - The Executioner's last songs vols. 2 & 3. Hilariously miserable, alt country (if such a beast exists) at its best. For all fans of the Felice Brothers, Handsome Family, Mekons and their ilk

Stefan - I have a new music collection, given that everything I seem to play reveals something new.

Getting my last fix as we're off to Paris in the morning.

Will probably finish the evening with the Liberation Music Orchestra - Not in our name. Will then be an iPod for the next days.

Excellent choice, Huw. Gives me enough "humming" memories, every time I listen to it. Not that you'd need it, in Paris...

Enjoy !

They are playing a concert in a small chapel in a place in France (st. marie aux mines) that we pass when we drive there for holidays.

Looks like a nice program (Beethoven violin sonatas (spring and a few others)/venue (See Harmonia mundi concert details for I. Faust)

How is this disc ?

Mark,
I've just recently started listening to Isabelle Faust and I generally like what I hear. What strikes me foremost is her distinct phrasing and shaping of the musical line as well as her quick but very clean playing. With the Schubert my only quibble would be that I would have preferred the "Andante molto" of the Fantaisie (a favorite of mine) to be more "Andante molto." A touch slower would have allowed them to draw out and search for answers in this profound musical opening.

I would also highly recommend the Beethoven Violin Concerto paired with the Kreutzer Sonata as well as the two Dvorak discs (Violin Concerto, Cello Concerto, and two piano trios). All on Harmonia Mundi and the playing and recorded sound is superb.

I'd drive to France to hear her if I had the opportunity Smile

Regards,
Doug

Doug,

Thanks for motivating me to get some tickets. The only place is where to stay afterwards... Maybe a nice hotel on the Alsace wine route (Molsheim). Smile

I listened to an older version of the Schubert Fantasie yesterday evening with W. Schneiderhan and W. Klein. Great music as you say and also a favourite piece of mine. There is also an ECM new series version with Andras Schiff and Yuuko Shiokawa which is quite good.

Regards
Mark
