I listened to an older version of the Schubert Fantasie yesterday evening with W. Schneiderhan and W. Klein. Great music as you say and also a favourite piece of mine. There is also an ECM new series version with Andras Schiff and Yuuko Shiokawa which is quite good.

Thanks for these two very interesting suggestions. The hunt is on now for them and they don't seem to be readily available at the main sources which probably explains why I have never come across them before (especially the Schiff).

The Schiff should be readily available. Try Caiman America for the best value for money, the ECM website (www.ecmrecords.de) (search for Schiff under ECM new series). The other one (Schneiderhan and Klien) is a vinyl boxset and I could not find this on CD.
