Earlier:
JS Bach Brandenburg Concertos Numbers Five in D and Six in B Flat - The Fifth with the Danish Radio Chamber Orchestra, and the Sixth with the Royal Chapel Orchestra of Copenhagen.
Next to come is the C Minor Concerto for Oboe, Violin, String Orchestra and Continuo, and after that The Double Violin Concerto in D Minor.
All these led in recordings for Danish HMV between 1946 and 1950 by Mogens Wöldike.
At that time Danish HMV was still working with pre-1939 78 rpm wax recording machines, but the quality is splendid, which suits the meticulous music making. There is something ceremonial [but not pompous or over-projected] about these performances which major on clear presentation of the balance of lines in counterpoint far more than any obvious drive of a romantic nature. The tempi are moderate and allow for the clearest articulation of the phrasing of the lines and how these work together to make the multi-layered tapestry which is the miracle of Bach's composing style.
For all that these performances are phenomenally detailed, detail does not impede the flow, but somehow becomes the "very flow itself!"
Especially the Fifth Brandenburg, with a finely caught [in the recording] harpsichord, there is a steady momentum that seems to stem from the solo harpsichord as much as the other soloists the flute and violin. I would count this as possibly the most significant recording of the work I have had the chance to listen to, and it is one that will never grow irritating through mannerism or eccentricity.
It is a great pleasure to encounter such gloriously unforced music making, which actually contains a fierce fire of emotional commitment burning within, but certainly under the surface. That surface is one of lucid presentation of the ideas, which approach at first might seem austere - even perhaps verging on the pedantic. That would be a wrong assessment in my view.

Trying to see if I can enjoy them again.
I was really put off the band by a gig I saw in 2006 (Blackpool), but maybe it is time to revisit them again.
Still one of my very favourite album artworks, not only visually strong but fits the ideas and content of the music. A sort of 60's town planner's ideal world decaying and people lost within it.
EIDT - Hmmm. Maybe not time to revisit them fully yet, skipped a few tracks and picked out my favourites - 'Subterranean Homesick Alien', 'Climbing the Walls', 'The Tourist', but does not seem such an essential album as it did ten years ago.
