Haitink has never convinced me in Mahler's 6th and this rather dull new account from Chicago doesn't change that.

After seeing them on the Jools Holland narcism hour a few weeks back (pretty much the only redeeming feature as I recall), thought I'd try The Gutter Twins, Saturnalia. Pleased I did!

Debussy, Complete Works for Piano, Vol. 3, played by Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. At the moment, Volumes 1, 2, & 3 are getting played a great deal around here. A terrific set so far. Can't wait for volume 4.

JWM,With you all the way on the Gutter Twins, but surely you're not dismissing the mighty 'Pentangle' who also played on the same show?!!!!

(BTW, do you have any solo Lanegan stuff? - I think you'd enjoy it if you like the Gutter Twins)

Cheers Geoff. Actually, my knowledge of Giuffre is limited to his work with Bley and Swallow, but I'm keen to explore his earlier albums, most of which appear to be freely available these days, after years of being out of print.

Really got into this over the last day or so, it's described as Trance Blues (!?) and I can see why, layered looping repetitive chords make for a mesmerising listen - some great subtle playing here with good support from the likes of Charlie Musselwhite and Gary Moore.

I know, Geoff.
I just had some friends over last week who listened and liked the disc a lot. I told them (un-aware of the price) that they probably could get it from Amazon. They must offer some mortgages to finance those discs.

Bach, Partitas Nos. 2, 3, 4, played by Murray Perahia.
Breathtaking - musically, intellectually, and aurally. I can't say enough good things about Murray Perahia and this wonderful recording; this is what a Hamburg Steinway sounds like. Kudos to Sony and the producer/recording engineer here. I guess I'm just happy when I get to listen to a descent recording of piano music because it seems that a very high percent of my piano CD's are spoiled because of poor recording standards.
