Dear Tam,

I am so glad that the things are pleasing! I feel much happier about my memory of Furtwangler's many great recordings now I don't have them! I am sure you understand the difficulty for me as it was, but he was a tremendous musician, and I am happy enough to say so at one remove!

~<>~ Henry Purcell (1659-1695) ~<>~

Odes for St Cecilia's Day · Music for Queen Mary

Emma Kirkby soprano

Michael Chance, Kevin Smith counter-tenors

Rogers Covey-Crump, Charles Daniels
Paul Elliott, Neil Jenkins, Andrew King

Michael George, Simon Grant,
David Thomas, Richard Wistreich
basses

Roger Woolley organ

TAVERNER CONSORT, CHOIR & PLAYERS ~<>~ Andrew Parrott direction

Recording Abbey Road Studios London August 1988 (cd 1) - 1985 (cd 2)

Finding this very formal and stiff upper lip for my taste but plenty of tracks where the going is more relaxed, even dreamy and this is actually quite good. I’ve never really liked the brash trumpety fanfare stuff that Purcell produced but here and there tucked away on these 2 cd’s are very nicely sung performances that are, imho, up there with the best of ‘em.
Kindly lent to me by my colleague friend…
glad this double CD didn’t cost me what he paid for it! : )

Couldn't agree more. Your next one is also 'spot on'. Well played.

Oh well. One man's meat etc....personally I feel Amused To Death is his finest and one of my favourite Cds, especially the Jap edition I have which is a cut above my older UK one.

's funny how often I play this after one of the albums proper, almost as if I want to hear some of the songs the way they should be..!
