A series of 3 LP's recorded live over 3 nights

GREAT - Art Pepper AFTER he got over the drugs.

Just a personal opinion, but I think Pepper's playing near the end, when he tried to go "outside" did not measure up to the high level of consistency of his earlier work. A great talent, for sure, and one of the most original of the post-Parker alto players.

Lovely disc. My only quibble is that the recording levels are a bit low, making tape hiss rather noticeable in quieter passages.

One for George!

....Oldnslow I know what you are saying. I have quite a few studio sessions from the mid to late 1950's where Art was in his 'smooth fluid groove' and clearly 'West Coast' as the label on the box said.

BUT....I urge you to check out at least one of these (they are available on CD aswell though a bit hard to come by).

This was 1977 and yet it was the first time Pepper had lead a group on the east coast. His playing here is emotional amd has a rawness which speaks of the life he had lived by then but the skill is still there. The resultis an entirely different sound and improvisations from anything eles I have from him. These are long tracks averaging 11 minutes each with fully developed soloing which Pepper shows he can sustain in an impressive way.

regards
Geoff

1983 in that it's like the stuff REM were doing back then. If you like the early stuff then you'll like this. I certainly do.
