Haim,

many thanks for posting this one. It surprises me to still come across Blue Note covers (after many many years of collecting) that I am not familiar with. Even more surprising that it is a Bill Evans cover.

Am sure it is a great recording but I will have to get it just for the cover.

Cheers ... Oliver

The cover art of the Undercurrent always reminds me of the haunting under water scene from the Night of the Hunter...

Very eerie indeed.

If you haven't seen the film, rent it.

It's a good one. ( Charles Laughton directed )

John Surman - Glancing Backwards

A 3CD compilation of his early 70s work on the Pye label - a bit different from his recent output, but even an ECM loving pansy like me occasionally needs a blast of free jazz!

Weird recording though - (seismic) bass and cymbals hard in the left channel, sax and the rest of the drum kit hard to the right.

Have you heard his recent album with James Moody 'Rain on the Window'. It's very good, and is on the pansy's label of choice.

This album is dreadful - avoid like plague. I don't mean the group are poor, I can't tell and I always remembered them as being better than this. The recording quality is simply awful and the book that comes with it is rubbish - no info at all.

From his expression, I think the monkey on the cover must have played the contents.

Could anybody recommend something else by Man that contains Daughter of the Fireplace and sounds half decent.

Thanks, Rotf

Not yet Nigel. I traded in some CDs at the weekend, and Surman/Moody was in my (too big) takeaway pile. I decided to leave it because I was in the mood (geddit?!) for something less familiar. In the end, I walked out with the above Surman compilation (which is very good/interesting, and makes me wonder when Surman changed tack), and the following:

Norma Winstone - Distances
Matthias Eick - The Door (very popular with the ECM mafia, by the look of it)
Charles Lloyd - Lift Every Voice
Tim Berne - The Sevens

A nice mix of soothing and "challenging", from what I've heard so far.

Cheers
Nigel
