Nigel - Haim.....either of these are worth checking out from his ealier recordings:
If you want to hear a different much more matue Art Pepper these are worth looking for either on CD or LP
A series of 3 LP's recorded live over 3 nights - Art Pepper AFTER he got over the drugs.
As I said earlier on here....This was 1977 and yet it was the first time Pepper had lead a group on the east coast. His playing here is emotional amd has a rawness which speaks of the life he had lived by then but the skill is still there. The result is an entirely different sound and improvisations from anything eles I have from him. These are long tracks averaging 10 - 11 minutes each with fully developed soloing which Pepper shows he can sustain in an impressive way.
regards
Geoff

Another highly enjoyable album of Canadian blues, with French influences thrown in for good measure...

Thanks for the prompt Gian (still rate field songs as his single most consistent album)
Hi Zipper!
I think imho that the two records have a different moulds.
If i should make a choice between the two i'd take Field Songs as well.
Bubblegum is not inferior but, i think, only different.
Cheers!

One of those albums that gets better with every listen. Recorded live to 2 track in 2 days in May 1997 and sounds amazing. How can bands take 16 months to record an album?

Just about have time for a test-drive spin with my most recently purchased cd, before cruzing off to work this evening... A fine album i used to own on vinyl, and after all these years it's good to hear them still firing on all four : )
(all five members of the band, that is.)
1. Good Times Roll
2. My Best Friend's Girl
3. Just What I Needed
4. I'm In Touch With Your World
5. Don't Cha Stop
6. You're All I've Got Tonight
7. Bye Bye Love
8. Moving In Stereo
9. All Mixed Up
debut album @1978

Sounds interesting - I'll give it a go. The three Art Pepper records Geoff recommends are all superb. There is a fourth volume called Volume 4 - More for Les, which has extra tracks from the three nights, and is probably my favourite. For early Pepper, you won't beat Art Pepper meets the rhythm section - recorded with Miles's rhythm section as a one off. It's quite wonderful.

Baroque violin sonatas with organ and harpsichord accompaniment - sounds potentially horrible, but it's a real delight. And yes, I am listening to it now.
Nigel
Nigel,
This trio made three superb discs on ECM. The other two are:

Unfortonately, there will not be any more recordings of this magical trio since Aloysia Assenbaum died of an illness at a relatively young age.
Haim
Thanks Haim, I'll certainly check those out. I too was sorry to read of Assenbaum's death.
That Kim Kashkashian and Robert Levin disk is also on my "to buy" list - I love the sound of the viola.

Thanks Geoff - and thanks to Nigel (HH) for drawing your reply to my attention. I notice Jimmy Giuffre's name on the cover of that first album - one of the great (mostly) unsung heroes of modern jazz, in my view - sadly no longer playing now, as he has Parkinson's Disease, but what a legacy. Anything by the Giuffre/Bley/Swallow trio is well worth hearing.
Nigel - hope you enjoy the Biber on ECM!
