Just returned from a fantastic listening day at David's house. It is not often you get the chance to listen to three, well actually counting the speaker change, four different systems in one go. It is a bit like being a kid in a candy store.

As always I walked away with a few titles (below) to add to my collection, many thanks again.

Cheers ... Oliver Cool

Just finished the Pastoral Sympony by Beethoven.

Klemperer in 1950 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, currently out [via Amazon.com] on Vox CDX2 5527.

I have tremendous admiration for Klemperer as a musician who delves so far below the obvious surface of music, and this is not only my favourite recording of the work [after 38 years of acquaintance] but one that is so natural and expressive, without a hint of exageration that one can never have that thought that it could go any other way! Klemperer is by no means ina rush - though the strorm is apparently the fastest on record, but retains both power and complete clarity - but everything just gently moves at a tempo that allows for every emotion in the music to be explored without any need for underlining this or pedalling back on that detail.

I strongly recommend this issue for any who struggle to see what this most gentle work is about or even struggle with Beethoven. The couplings are the then unique Missa Solemnis LP recording, and a fine traversal of the Fith Symphony, all from 1950. I think the Pastoral is on some days my favourite Beethoven recording, which is saying something!

It's been a madly busy day with pleasures, visiting shops with a none driving friend, trying to sort out my new room and singularly failing because music took over!

Haydn Symphony No 103, Concertgebeou, Philips.
Essential Ella, Verve
Bach Oboe d'Amoure Concerto, Reichenberg/Pinnock, DG Archive
Schubert Trout Quintet, Schnabel and the Pro Arte Quartet, HMV 78s [1934], EMI transfer on Arabesque [US label]

Tomorrow is due for sorting the room out now, but the only thing I have done so far is get the replay sounding just so! As the music choice testifies. No Hifi party, just great music making!
