have love on earth, that seems to be number one. You know, there's food,
water, air, and love. And love is just basically heartbreak. Humans can't
live in the present, like animals do. Humans are always thinking about the
future or the past. So it's a veil of tears, man. I don't know anything
that's going to benefit me except love. I just need an overwhelming amount
of love. And a nap. Mostly a nap."

The second of the Miles Davis box sets I ordered recently. Thoroughly enjoyed the 'On The Corner' box, and am now starting on this.

Fantasy and Fugue, BWV 537, in C Minor

Fugue, BWV 539, in D Minor

Toccata and Fugue, BWV 540, in F

Prelude and Fugue, BWV 541, in G

Fantasy and Fugue, BWV 542, in G Minor

Prelude and Fugue, BWV 543, in A Minor

Prelude and Fugue, BWV 544, in B MInor

Played by Helmut Walcha on the Organ [finished in 1680] in Cappel Parish Church. This is an utterly apt instrument built by Arp Schnitger, and so clear in the relatively small Church, though the instrument is really too big, being intended for, and first used in, a much larger Monastic setting. In the wrong hands it could be overpowering, but Walcha takes every chance to keep all the contrapuntal lines utterly clear, and so the result is deeply expressive without any artifice or false excitement.

This is the second disc from the ten CD set of the [slightly incomplete] Mono Cycle recorded between 1947 and 1953. These are an object lesson in how to not only play the music, but also how to record the organ.

Till these recordings are heard it is really difficult to get an idea of the possible great effect this music can have, if one has only heard performances that seem to major more on loudness than subtlety!

ATB from George

PS: I do wonder if this hour of Bach organ music is not the most wonderful possible selection of condensed great music and music making on records!
