Mozart:

Serenata Notturna

Piano Concerto in E Flat, K 449. [No 14]

Adagio and Fugue [version Mozart made for strings]

Violin Concerto in A [No5]

Adolf Busch [violin], Rudolf Serkin [piano], with the Busch Chamber Players recorded by English and US Columbia between 1938 and 1945.

This is a style of music making that has completely disappeared now, more is the pity. Without the romantic excesses that could be found at the time these performances restore the proper chamber orchestra scale without making the music a history piece with too much studied HIP affectation!

This compilation is out on Pearl CD 9278 in a successful and clear transfer if with a fair amount of 78 surface noise!

For those not allergic to listening through the recording, this is priceless music making. I wish EMI would raid the archives and come up with master transfers. The recordings themselves are very fine.

Luxen - I have read a lot of bad press on it but at full blast in my car it is good enough for me. I think the car is the best place for it.

Cheers

Always nice to hear a new Brahms German Requiem (or in this case an older one), this on BBC Legends from Giulini and the LPO at the 1978 Edinburgh Festival.
