Terrific album, favorites are Webb's "Wichita Lineman" and Cohen's "Suzanne", love Steve Gadd's drumming and Andrea Zonn's incredible fiddle contributions. If you haven't got it yet, get it !
Agreed, Jeff. Those are my two faves, too. Gadd sounds fantastic, all the musicians are stellar ... Goldings' luminous piano and Landau's shivering guitar. Yo Yo Ma's bittersweet cello on Suzanne, too. I love it that the album was recorded mostly live, with all the musicians playing all at the same time, minimal overdubs.
And Zonn's lovely violin and voice, yes (check out her own wonderful album Love Goes On). The daughter of a former composition professor of mine, I couldn't be prouder than if she were my own daughter.
And, of course, JT ... golden honeyed voice, crystalline guitar, better than ever!
All the best,
Fred

Car music.
Posted on: 06 October 2008 by fred simon
Haim, I don't know what kind of car you drive, or where you drive it, but as much as I dearly love that album I can't listen in my car ... way too much competition from road noise.
No, for Jarrett's The Melody At Night, With You I need a quiet space, a quiet mind, ideally late at night, lights are low.
I assume you know the back story for this wonderful and unique album?
All the best,
Fred

Fred,
I drive a very small car 13 miles twice a day from home to the train staion and back.
I know the story behind The Melody and on some long days it is the right music to listen to in the car despite the road noise and traffic.
It even improves my driving, not to mention my mood. Sometimes I do the same with your music.
Regards,
Haim

The Fall - Imperial Wax Solvent. Not sure how Mark E Smith can still be so angry at his age, but he is hardly likely to ever have an LP of ballads! Great stuff, although not as good as Fall Heads Roll.

Anyone who has seen Roman Polanski's film, "The Pianist" will be instantly familier with the haunting Schubert Sonate (track 4). If you haven't seen that film, you ought to, it's very good albeit tradgic.
The only shame with this superb "Der Arpeggione" disc is the fairly short total playing time of 48 minutes : (

Perfect Unpop: Peel Show Hits and Long-Lost Lo-Fi Favourites Vol.1 - 1976-1980, as recommended by Ghettoyout.
Although I already had a number of these on 7 inch, it was definite worth a punt for some of these other old gems. Full track listing below.

"In 1630 a strange disease called “Tarantism” struck Italy. It was attributed to a spider’s bite with alternating symptoms of exaltation and prostration. Tarantella are enchanting songs and dances meant to heal the patient by creating a state of trance."
It works very well too! : )

Truly wonderful Blues and some excellent production considering the age - the tracks with Sonny Terry are sublime.![]()
Hi Zipper,
Where did you pick up the lightnin CD? He is one of my favourite Bluesmen
ATB
KK
Hey KK,
Got it from Amazon - it's actually a repackaged collection which was previously called 'The Best of Lightning Hopkins' (along with about 30 other CDs with that name!) It focuses on his Prestige recordings from 1960-64, which is my preferred period of his (mostly due to the top notch sound quality of these recordings).The CD was very reasonably priced and came with a free Prestige Blues/Jazz sampler as part of the package for added value! Track listings are as follows;
Disc: 1
1. Back to New Orleans
2. Automobile Blues
3. Pneumonia Blues
4. Mojo Hand
5. Black Cadillac
6. You Is One Black Rat
7. Last Night Blues
8. Blues in the Bottle
9. Walkin' This Road by Myself
10. Got to Move Your Baby
11. Goin' Away
12. Happy Blues for John Glenn
13. Mean Old Frisco
14. Katie Mae
15. I'm a Crawling Black Snake
16. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl
Some tracks are re-recordings of earlier pieces from previous lables which he remade for Prestige. All in all an excellent value disc - if you are a big fan you may already have these tracks covered on other releases but I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in quality blues/folk and who hasn't yet discovered the wonderful talent that was Lightnin' Hopkins!

Thanks VZ, i'll be sure to add that to my basket.
