V.P.I. HW-19Jr Turntable Information

Posted by: Stuart Frazer on 10 September 2001

Does anyone know much about these turntables.

The following example is for sale at $745 US (around £510):

V.P.I. HW-19 Jr with Audioquest Pt-6 Tonearm and Sumiko Blue Point Special Cartridge: Absolute mint condition. Extremely low hours. The HW-19 has the light oak trim. Also has the dustcover. Everything in perfect shape with all boxes and papers.

Anybody heard one or use one (preferably with Naim)

This would be my 1st real turntable and I am only considering it. Would it be worth holding out and getting a VPI TNT (the big brother). Other considerations are in the form of LP12's; Gyro; Rega and even a highly spec'd Manticore Mantra I’ve been offered.

Any views or information forthcoming would be appreciated.

Stuart,

If you are in England, used LP12s are a much better deal. The VPI in question is an Axis-level table (in performance, but with different priorities) at a LP12/Ittok/Karma price. What's more, it will run at the wrong speed in England, so you will need to change the motor.

Thanks for you reply Eric

It looks like the VPI's a miss then. Maybe start looking elsewhere.

Anybody got any info feedback on the Manticore Mantra ?
