Our there any good Artists to come out of those Shows?
Posted on: 26 November 2009 by Sister E.
No - unless you like B grade Whitney Houston clones(Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke)or stunningly suburban C grade blue eyed soul(Will Young).

The American Idol produced among others Carrie Underwood, I really dig her.

Does karaoke get included as "music" here?
Leona Lewis is the most likely candidate I guess, but its not music for me.
That blonde in the blue dress looks pretty though & that's all that matters isn't it?
But hey, its pop music aimed at the teens& brain dead adults.
As Diccus62 said, this thread will be open season for grumpy old men such as I.

Trash freak shows for maladjusted look-at-me! i-wanna-be-famous! sad people. Run by obscenities that abuse the sorry and mediocre and feed off the carrion.

The "xxxx's Got Talent" franchise has produced Susan Boyle, who can clearly sing, although the whole she-bang does shriek exploitation. But "Ukraine's Got talent" discovered this. Not music, but moved the audience to tears, and deservedly so.
PS - looks to me as though this woman has since found work making an advert for Twinings tea, but if not she should sue...

Agreed.
Incredible.
No wonder records sell more on the cover photo than the quality of the artistry contained in the actual recording. And people say things are not going downhill.

Mostly, no, these shows aren't designed to locate true artistic talent.
However, I agree that Leona Lewis has a good voice - although I can't get enthusiastic about the songs she's asked to sing.
But because I always have time for a great pop song, my favourite act to come out of reality TV is Girls Aloud. They're singles are consistently catchy, and they have released a few real gems (Biology, Call the Shots) among them. I expect some of these songs will eventually be viewed as pop classics, in the same way that Abba were eventually accepted into the canon, after years of being dismissed by "serious" rock fans. The same thing appears to be happening with Take That now, although I never really got into their stuff.
One thing I find interesting is that GA are a manufactured pop band - as far as I'm aware they don't write any of their own songs, or contribute to the arrangements and production. I guess this could be seen as a reason to deny legitimacy. But then again, the fact that a TV programme or a film is made by many cooperating partners, does not mean that it cannot be good art.
Even if you don't like the noise GA make, you can't deny they've got legs

I bet that Edwin Fischer and Otto Klemperer had legs, but I never fantisized over them.
Nor Bach's, nor Haydn's ... and so on.
PS: I assume that H Walcha had the best feet in the business, but listening to his Bach performances, on the organ, that is about the last thing to pass through the brain!
Posted on: 27 November 2009 by droodzilla
Hehe... Don't get me wrong George, I love Walcha's AoF and Fischer's WTC, and thank you for bringing them to my attention. And there's no doubt in my mind that Bach's music is better than GA's songs (hard to believe this even needs to be said). However, there are times when a good blast of pop music does wonders to blow the cobwebs away for me - and I will turn to GA for just that (on YouTube - I don't own any of their records).
I think it's worth saying that there's an art to crafting a great pop song. Many try, but only a small minority of songs still get requested at wedding discos ten years later.
Cheers
Nigel

Adam Lambert was the runner up on American Idol last year and was streets ahead of the competition in his range, versatility and stage presence amongst other things. Now, he is a star.
