25o hot, slight hissing at nil volume after changing briks to younger pair and shortening cables

Posted by: naimtheday on 02 June 2002

Yesterday I changed my Briks for a newer pair and shortened the speaker cables (Naim) by 2.5 metres each. I have terminated with gold plated banana plugs with screw grip. I noticed a slight hiss unrelated to volume and next day I note that the 250 is HOT to touch, I don't think it was before.
Any ideas? I have checked all the connections but they seem to be ok.
I did take the feet off the 250 and had a look inside as I had read that you could change the front edge from silver to black - no joy as contersunk allen key screws wouldn't align so put all back as was

Wait a minute. Are the cables less than 3.5M in lebgth after the surgerY? How good is the connection to the plugs?

They must still be 4.5meters long, possibly 5 (under the floor)
Any ideas?
By the way the sound has been slightly buzzy too

It is approx 1984 and was working fine until yesterday when I made the changes - Naimtheday

I think it is very unlikely to be the speakers and is merely just coincidence. Look on the brightside - if you don't have an Active system you have less boxes to worry about. As regards the silver/black scenario, I used to always go black except for the various incarnations of the 250, because it could'nt be done, an oversight by the design department I'd say.
All the best,

I experienced very similar symptoms after doing some power-off/recabling activity when intoducing a surround sound system.

I was initially convinced that the new cabling must be generating some interference but in the end after much testing it became evident that the 250 had developed a fault (components are most likely to die in a power on/off cycle).

I had it & the HiCap serviced by Naim and this resolved the fault and hugely improved the sound quality (amazingly so actually).

Hey LINNSTER,

don't quite understand.

If you have Naim stuff you leave it on all the time.

If your Linn stuff is unplugged from the wall then it's just as switched off as the Naim stuff.

The only "benefit" that you have is that it gets switched on & off every time you use it, instead of once every six months.

Jellyheadjeff is quite right that stuff is likely to fail when you switch it on, it's just that your stuff goes through about 200 times as many on/off cycles if you enjoy it enough to use it every day.

cheers, Martin

P.S. if you sent an e-mail to the administrators, they will be happy to change your name.

Try pulling the speaker leads from the back of the amp.

If it still runs hot, pull the lead from the HiCap, too.

If it still runs hot after that, send it back to Naim. If not, then work out which components makes it run hot when it's plugged in.

cheers, Martin

It is running at about 40 degrees but according to Naim the thermal cutouts activate at 70 degrees - Now that is HOT! I have tried disconnecting the speaker cables - no noticable change, then the Hicap lead as well - still no change, so it looks like I will have to send both the 250 and the Hicap back to Naim for a service - approx £150 and £100 inclusive of VAT, transport extra. I can apparently have both cosmetically upgraded but then it starts to get expensive, perhaps I should just try and find some recent new style items and sell what I have got as they are? Does anyone know of any?
