Is it still best to deliver your Naim Kit to Salisbury? 110 up to 140

Posted by: Ian R on 12 May 2002

Im hoping to have my 110 serviced by naim soon

I heard its cheaper than handing it to one local dealer AND avoids at least one journey in Courier hands and vans.

Quote from Naim below: comments welcome re upping to 140 as to benefits or not. I am hanging onto this kit for sure.

"The service includes replacing tantalum capacitors on both and reservoir caps on the 110, using latest spec. A sizeable upgrade you might want to consider is to have the 110 upgraded to 140 - which replaces the power supply end of the unit completely. That costs approx £170 plus a minor service on the amp boards making it about £200.
It's not economically viable to do any more than service the 42 preamp - even that's debatable - you could look for a higher spec pre-amp such as the 32-5 which you could get for about £150."

Hi Ian

I have both delivered and 'posted' kit back to Naim and the advantages to delivering it is a pleasant ride out into the country and a factory tour smile

However, since you are a good distance away I would post it, unless you happen to be in the area and since they will be checking it out and fixing it for you, any damage that might be sustained during the journey down will be fixed and covered by insurance.

Do a search of the forum in the 110 to 140 conversion, I believe the consensus on the forum is that it is worth it sonically but you have to decide if it is worth it financially, for yourself.

BTW I think Naims advice on the NAC is spot on, if you are keeping it for a number of years you might want to invest in a new volume pot, they have a tendency to switch to one channel operation after about 15 years smile

Regards

Andy

I had my 110 seviced and upgraded recently - well worth the money. I had my NAC42 serviced as well, like you I'm keeping it for now though I dare say that others on the forum would recommend a NAC 32.5 or NAC 72.

Its a long way from Southern Scotland to Salisbury though.

Thanks so far for the advice

Im going down to Devon for a "Festival" remember them.... so could swing by naim on way down and back on way up a week later which would hopefully be long enough.

Its not the volume pot its the selector pot thats difficult and it seem sealed so no way in with deoxit etc.

However I can live with it on a second system.

I had my twenty year old 160 serviced and upgraded to (power supply) 180 spec. Cost about £200; but it's almost as good as a new amp. Sharpened up the sound, considerably. Well worth it.

Give them some warning if you're visiting and want the 'tour'. Not always possible.
