Rick Stein's restaurants in Padstow.
Posted by: Tony Lockhart on 27 October 2008
My parents are off to Padstow for a few days next month and intended to try one of Rick's restaurants while they were there. The trouble is they've now found mainly bad reviews on t'internet but can't find anyone to give a first hand, balanced opinion.
Has anyone here tried them?
Thanks

Hi Tony
We haven't tried the restaurants but have been to the fish and chip shop on the wharf twice now. Very very nice. Not exactly healthy, but very nice.

We had lunch at the Seafood Restaurant some years ago now and really enjoyed it. No complaints here.

Hi
Beautiful food and a great atmosphere when my wife and I were there a couple of years ago.
Any complaints?
Yes, I was hungry again just one hour after leaving, such were the portions.
Regards, Ian

Not been there, but my guess is that the bad reviews are from locals...

It is not for nothing that the place is known locally as Padstein.

Yes, it's fantastic food, but it's fine dining portions which is what you'd expect. I don't know what the financial climate has done to the trade there, but I expect it exists in a protective bubble because we've had to book months in advance for dinner there and have only jumped the queue once by staying at the hotel itself, but then that's quite expensive. I doubt the waiting list has reduced much. You'll need to allow £1500 for the weekend if you want to stay on the premises.
It's probably the best seafood in the UK, apart from maybe Three Chimneys on the Isle Of Skye. I've eaten at Ramsey's restaurants, I've eaten Johnatan Atherton's food, Angela Hartnett's food, but Three Chimneys is the best place I've ever eaten. I wish I lived in the Highlands sometimes.
Padstow though for me, it's heaven. I adore seafood. My brother-in-law came over from Cypress just to go there.

I'd be surprised if they can get in if they haven't booked by now.

I did warn them a month ago that it might be too late. But they'd rather not get in than be disappointed!

It was a while ago but we have made several visits to the Middle St Cafe now renamed Stein's Bistro at the top end of the town. Superb food and good value for money.

Friend of mine and family went a couple of weeks ago. Most thought it was wonderful however friend disappointed that she had to pull her crab to bits herself. I'm sure they would have done it for her if she had asked.

A group of 8 of us booked months in advance and went there from Falmouth. Underwhelmed! 8 proved a difficult number for them and at the end of the evening we all left feeling angry and disappointed. There are a number of great seafood restaurants in devon and Cornwall. Rick Stein's was not one of them when we went there.
