High quality iRadio stations?

Posted by: Hedstrom on 21 October 2010

I have recently started to use iRadio (sonos connected to my 52+300). I am very happy with this setup and I think the iRadio is a wonderful way of finding new music. Many of the stations are sub-quality, however, as far as sound quality is concerned. I am sure some of you have more experience in this than I have and I would be keen to learn about your recommended radio staions?

You could use something like radiotime.com to look for internet radiostations of your liking.

It will give you plenty but you will have to look at the details of each to see what bitrate they use.

But at least you've got them all at one place.

Hi Hedstrom -

Welcome to the forum!

If you enjoy "eclectic rock", then radioparadise dot com is a good choice. It's 192k MP3, but actually sounds pretty good!

if by "high quality" you mean lossless, then no. I dont think anyone is streaming anything other than MP3s at various bitrates. None are acceptable to ME for anything other than car listening.

You dont say what kind of music you want to find but ResonanceFM and WFMU are great if you want an adventure in sound more than, say, top40. Technical quality is so-so at 128kbps mp3.

it doesn't get much worse than that.

Thanks for the suggestions i received so far. One of you asked what kind of music I listen to. I have a rather ecclectic taste so I listen to a wide range of styles, from indie and alt country to Miles, Tom Waits, and Shostakovich.

Best,
Peter

I like FIP because of the diversity and the quality of the selection. They stream mp3 128 kb and the sound is good (maybe they are using very good source).

Good stations that I had not found. Quote on order - in meantime how do I err keep these statins on my Mac with iTunes? Just can't work out how to add them to a playlist or to the radio stations. Linn Jazz sounds good Smile

RadioIO! Based in Florida USA, they have scores of radio stations from Vocal Jazz, Real Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Movie Soundtracks, Classical, Blues, etc.

Absolute Radio streams only 128 kbps on your computer. Have a look on the homepage.

The all look like lossy formats to me. In different bitrates, but all lossy nonetheless.

Only one exception: OGG-FLAC seems to be lossless, but is only in a trial.
