nait 5 weirdness

Last night, put a CD on, pressed play and no sound although CDP appeared to be playing normally.
Moving volume knob resulted in strange high-pitched clicks (obviously something to do with resister ladder cutting resistors in/out).
Anyway, pressed mute and unmuted and the music flowed as normal....should I worry? is my Nait about to die? Anyone else seen this? Seems OK since...
