West Indies Test series

26-7 this is embarrassing! They could lose by a whole innings!

I've been watching England for the last 35 years and, though it hurts me to say, I'm not suprised, after all, it has happened before.
At least there's another 4 tests after this one.

Bloody hell! I missed this whilst watching the rugby. I'm glad I did now.

51 all out! Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!

A 1 innings and 23 runs defeat to start the series, this is bad.

I am not (too) worried about England's bowling, but I just do not understand how that team can fail to have more than one batsman into double figures.

Congratulations to the West Indies, their bowling was spot on, especially Jerome Taylor and Sulieman Benn, despite England's awful performance, their ability to make England play so poorly must be respected.

I'm cancelling my Sky Sports subscription !

I don't really don't know what to say - this has been a very poor day for sport in my case.

Oh we shall bounce back and I suppose a 3-1 series win is not too bad.

Quaking in your boots re the Ashes, Steve (Yo-Yo)?!!

Overheard on the radio today: Kevin Pietersen=Dumbslog Millionaire. Big Grin

Not a great day for English cricket but all is not lost. Last time this happpened we went on to win the series I believe. A total collapse like that is one of those bizarre scenarios, the clatter of wickets, the panic in the dressing room etc. In the end every delivery looks like a hand grenade.

Anyway congrats to W Indies. I don't get TV coverage but from all accounts several players did really well. Hopefully this will boost crowds, and the game. The world is a better place with a strong W Indies cricket team.

Antigua day one-ABANDONED after less than 2 overs due to the state of the pitch and the bowlers run-ups in particular. Hard to see how they will play any of the game.

What a shameful farce. How could they not have tested these areas beforehand? It must have been obvious if it took just ten deliveries to realise it was unusable. Feel sorry for the crowd, especially if they have travelled from the UK.

Strauss/Cook averages have gone up a smidge anyway. Shah will probably be rejected by the selectors for the next match on the grounds he failed to score.

According to the bbc this morning they are going to start playing on Sunday 'at another venue'.
What a farce!

After England's performance in the 1st Test that would just about sum up the tour so far!

Not the West Indies tour, but rather than start a new cricket thread.

Did anyone else see Voges catch in the Aus/NZ 20/20 yesterday?

BBC on-line report

It was one of the most amazing catches I have seen.

I would post a link which has a video clip so others can celebrate such a great piece of play, but the Australian Cricket Board have been policing the internet to remove any postings of the clip, and have not put it on their website!!!

So even if you were able to admire the play of an individual player, you can still hate Aussy cricket.

Still pretty good with PC making his 100 and England 534-8...
Posted on: 16 February 2009 by Mike7
568-8..be good to get to 600!

Bit of a turnaround from the first test. W Indies need another 360 tomorrow with 7 wickets standing. Let's hope England can close it out.
Posted on: 20 February 2009 by JamieL
Damn! Just watched it today from the disc recorder, just needed one more wicket.

I have never known Test Match cricket to provide such huge entertainment, at least to someone who passionately hates everything that English cricket stands for.

As someone of West Indian heritage it's great to see this apparent renaissance in their fortunes. Here's hoping they can keep it up.

Let me see, what does English cricket stand for?

Huge self-serving egos (KP, or figjam)
A blatant consumerist approach (Flintoff will be ready for the Indian bash)
General ineptitude (the Ashes win a couple of years ago was a complete fluke)
Gross mis-management at the highest level (the whole of the MCC board)
Spin that Campbell would have been proud of (quote 'we have taken a lot of positives from this match' after a 51 run second innings)
and, not least,
A travelling fan club (The Barmy Army) which rivals the worst excesses and boorish behaviour of football fans. Enough???

And well done WI, please ensure that you beat this miserable England side and puncture the optimism of its misguided supporters.
Posted on: 22 February 2009 by Bruce Woodhouse
Well I'll respond to that and then slink off under my stone.

Vast egotist he may be but at least KP actually performs. I don't see too many others in the main squad with such arrogance so perhaps he is one of a kind.

The huge financial carrot of the IPL could be argued to be something wrong with Indian cricket. Being drawn to such quick fire wealth is hardly difficult to understand.

The Ashes was not a fluke, it was glorious skilful cricket and sporting behaviour at the highest level. Engalnd have failed to deliver consistently since without doubt.

Post-match spin is hardly unique to English cricket, banal and pointless though it may be.

The Barmy Army may be boorish but they fall well short of the 'worst excesses of football fans'. Way short. They also represent the tip of a very substantial iceberg of loyal and dedicated cricket supporters who follow England around the globe; and who make up the overwhelming majority of the crowds in this current series.

I've no idea how competent the MCC is.

The best thing about English cricket is that I play local league cricket. Team spirit, good competition, crap cricket teas and local grounds squeezed between farms and hillsides. All in the natting rain usually. Best sport in the world.
