Jimmy Giuffre RIP
Posted by: droodzilla on 11 May 2008
I missed it at the time, but one of jazz's great innovators died recently:
Giuffre ObituaryReally gutted to read the news this morning - a hero of mine, and a pioneer of the chamber jazz style that led to the likes of ECM. If you love that label as much as I do, you owe it to yourself to hear Giuffre's trio recordings with Bley and Swallow. ECM boss Eicher loved these recordings so much he bought the master tapes and reissued them on ECM as the Jimmy Giuffre 3's "1961". Not a complete surprise as Giuffre had suffered from Parkinson's disease for a long time, but still very sorry to lose him.

Nigel,
Yes sad but not surprising and not too bad an innings at 86.
1961 on ECM is a wonderful record with wonderful cover photos particularly on the vinyl.
I don't know if you have them but these two albums might interest you with the same line up but many years later under Paul Bley's name.

Hi Adrian
Yes, I have both of those - actually I first got into Giuffre when a friend of mine bought tickets to see the trio in Manchester, at about the time those albums were released. It remains one of my fondest memories of live music in any genre. I keep meaning to get the live album on Hat Art from the same trio - and any othe Giuffre I can lay my hands on!
Regards
Nigel

Hi Stefan - I can't imagine you'll be disappointed with 1961, but I'll be very interested to read what you make of it. Meanwhile...
... please don't order any more CDs!

A lot of jimmy's work is 'unsung'.
He was a stalwart side man who made a lot of mainstream jazz 'names' sound good on some famous LP's from the 50's / 60's aswell
Sad that he never got quite the amount of recognition he deserved.

Geoff
