Direct from 200 to AV Processor?

Instead of using unity gain from a Naim preamplifier is it possible to just go direct from a Naim 200 amp to an AV processor to power the front two channels of a home theater system?

Rock, I'm not entirely sure what you're proposing here. The processor has to come before the amp. Unity gain allows the preamp to fit between them so the amp can be used for 2 channel replay through the preamp as well as multi-channel replay through the processor.

Let us know what do you have and what are you trying to achieve and we'll try and make a recommendation.

Hi Richard

I have separate 2-channel and AV setups in different rooms. My AV system has a non-Naim 5 channel amp and non-Naim 7 channel preamp/processor

I would like to connect a Naim amp to the front 2 channels of the AV system to improve the sound and to upgrade to 7 channels of amplification.

Since the AV system is dedicated the only use of a Naim preamp would be to use the unity gain AV connection to connect the Naim amp to the non-Naim HT preprocessor.

Is it possible to not use a Naim preamp and connect the Naim power amp directly to the HT processor?

Thanks much for your help

Hi Rock100,

that is possible, you just need the proper cables to connect the Nap200 with your pre, however, as I understood it, Naim strongly recommends to use Naim power amps only with Naim Pres.

Richard will be much more capable than I to explain the hows and whys.

Georg is correct, it's mainly to do with allowing the power amplifier to operate within its bandwidth "comfort zone" to get the best from it. However, I'd imagine most processors will have some form of bandwidth limiting (i.e. limiting ultrasonic stuff over 40kHz) so I guess it'll be a case of try it and see. You'll need an RCA- 4pin DIN interconnect - I think Naim can supply a suitable cable here.

Hi Stu

I have a fairly recent Integra DTC 9 Pre amp and a Rotel 1575 amp..... Not real exciting but ok for Home Theater

Just for fun I plugged in My Nait XS from my 2 channel system using unity gain and it took the sound to a new level.

My thought was to get a Nap 155 or Nap 200 and run it directly to the Integra and try to get the same improvement.

I guess another question would be does the unity gain connection sound so good because the Naim preamp is not just passing the signal directly to the HT preamp but is it actively involved in affecting the sound?

Thanks again for all the responses.......

Rock - i did this a few years back with an old system i had. Marantz surround processor into my normal 72/140 for the front channels, for the rear and centre i used a couple of Naim 90.3 amps running from the processor which worked fine with no issues. A company like Flashback cables can make up the RCA/DIN leads to your spec.

James

Per your suggestion, I bought the correct cable from Flashback and plugged in an old s/h 155xs I had, direct into my AV system. I now have beautiful Naim sound coming from the front channels.

To me, it almost sounds as good as when I had my Nait XS connected via Unity gain......

Thanks for your help

Did the same with a Yamaha DSP-E800 using a NAP140 for rears and another for centre (1 channel only) worked great until I lost a rear channel on the DSP-E800 and so invested in an AV2.

This is exactly what happens in AV bypass mode on a Naim preamplifier–if you are not using the preamp for any two-channels sources, then eliminate the extra box.

No bandwidth limiting or signal conditioning takes place, inasmuch is there is no active circuitry between the input and output socket.

Thanks David, it does work fine.....

I now have the best of both worlds - the 155xs makes a big improvement in my home theater system....

And no more listening to Disney movies thru my 282/200
