adding a nas

Posted by: Right Wing on 21 July 2010

hi all

bought a bufallo linkstation pro today to store my itunes library on, rather than my macbook pro. - which I am informed is the way to go?!

can I ask what is the best way to use/add the nas. I also run a timecapsule close to my system, should that change anything.

i presume an ethernet connection is the right way to go?

thanks in advance.

Only had this Buffalo Pro NAS one day, and it and its software are already giving problems!

Set it all up and loaded the backup software. Failed to copy some of the specified items, so carefully marked them all "share", even though they should have been that by default.

Restarted Windoze Vista, Memeo (the backup program) said an update was available. Clicked on download/run - stalled at 99%. After 20 minutes, hard reset of computer, then switched on, tried again - exactly the same thing happened (sigh)

Hard reboot again, ignored update request, and copied remaining desired files to NAS manually (drag and drop). OK until NAS threw a wobbler and changed name of the drive in the NAS Navigator Window. Memeo gave an error message saying something about firmware update required!

Tried various things, and finished up resetting Buffalo NAS to default settings. Now works OK again. Hardly inspires confidence, does it?

Decided I don't like the Memeo backup software supplied with the Buffalo NAS, so have uninstalled it. Much prefer to backup my files manually, anyway, so will continue to do it via Windows Explorer

Just one little query. I will need to verify copies. Not sure whether copying using Windows Explorer does this automatically.

Can only find one reference to this after extensive websearch. Site I found was ss64 (search parameters to find : copy verify). This site suggested commands for modifying CMD in Windows XP, but said that verify is on by default in Windows Explorer.

Can anybody confirm/refute this? If not on by default, can anyone suggest a program very simple to use program that will just let me manually backup files and will automatically verify the copies?
