Where has the treble gone?

Posted by: NB on 14 March 2001

I have been a good boy and replaced my speaker cable from cable chord flatline to Naim NACA5 as recommended by Naim and the forum members.

The speaker cable goes between my Naim 82/Hi-cap/180 and my Ruark Equinox speakers being fed by a Naim CDx.

However I was surprised by the result, yes there was a slight increase in the depth of the bass but the midband seems more closed in and the treble has dissapeared. My music now soundsdull and lifeless and I am dissapointed by the result.

I have checked the obvious, the wire is in the right direction. However the Equinox's have two sets of binding posts and I have fed the wire through both sets of posts as recommended by my dealer.

Will the sound improve with age, have I done something wrong or should I return to the original cable?

NB,

Try connecting both to the posts for the treble units. And also, do not forget to replace the shorting links of your speakers with naim cable. These has made a monumental difference in my case with epos22's.

Thanks for that I will give it a go, one of the speakers is closer to the amp than the other so there is an amount of coilling of one of the cables.

I spent all of last night trying different wiring techniques and I have ended up with one speaker sounding dull and bass heavy and one sounding over bright with no bass even though they are wired in exactly the same way. Weird eh!!

Apologies if youve alreday done this but have you ensured that the ridged side of the cable is connected to positive at the amp and speakers. Sounds like phase/polarity problem?

John,

Thanks for the advice, thats what I spent all last night doing, I don't think I have found the right soloution yet. I will let the system settle down and try again in the near future.
