Faint hum from CDPS

Posted by: Boz on 02 September 2002

Have searched the forum but couldn't find any answers to this one....

Have a CDPS with a CDX, which sounds fab, but gives a very faint hum which is definitely audible when it is switched on (which is all of the time). This hum is not through the speakers but from the CDPS itself.

Had been serviced a couple of years before I got it and used in a Naim system.
Is this a known trait for CDPS or XPS or is it just mine ?

Anyone had the same thing with a CDPS ?

Hi Boz,

I've had a variable hum from the CDPS both pre- and post- service. I usually dont notice it. As with most evil things, I tend to blame Didcot power station.

Thanks John that makes me feel better, it's not intrusive when you are playing music at almost any volume, even quiet, just wanted to make sure it wasn't something to worry too much about.

Cheers

Hi Boz,

Unfortunately I have the same problem on the XPS, as well as other 250 & Hi-cap, We have the similar system (Even I bought them new). Do you have the humming from 250 & Hi-cap? I was told that it is normal, as long as there is no burning smell???

cheers

My XPS makes an audible hum! I have been told its caused by dirty mains. So I fitted a dedicated spur. Still a hum. So I (stupidly) went and got a RA Superpurifier. Still a hum.

The Supercap and Armageddon are silent.

Keeping the volume at 10 o'clock on my 82 seems to help!

Oh - I thought the hum on the XPS was a substitute for the surface noise that you get with vinyl - ie to fill in the sounds of silence <g>

Note to the a r community - this is an attempt at humour

Hi Folks,

My CDPS hums too, but not as much as my 135s. These hums come on and off without rhyme or reason, and are pretty loud sometimes, to the point where they are clearly audible in quiet music. The 135s have their own dedidicated spur, the CDPS another, along with the other gear. Gets a bit annoying sometimes. Anyone have any explanations/suggestions?
