Linn Classik for sister who knows no better...???
Posted by: Top Cat on 16 December 2002
Hi folks.
My sister wants a compact hifi. Originally, she expressed some interest in getting a small seperates system but decided against it for reasons untold. She phoned me up yesterday seeking my opinions on Technics mini systems (shudder) - obviously, a Nait-based system for her is not going to be acceptable, sadly.
Anyway, once again I found myself at the crossroads of quality versus compactness, and the only solution I could come up against was the Linn Classik - better than any mini system, and more compact and stylish than a Nait system (or comparable small seperates system).
So, what I'm looking for is either a secondhand Classik (not necessarily a current model) or a cheap new Classik. Her budget was to be no more than £300 but I think I can up that to £500 by the use of subterfuge and elder-brotherly Jedi mind tricks.
Can anyone help? Speakers are no problem - she can borrow a pair off me until she can afford something decent. Basically, she's after a cheap all-in-one (and can't afford a full rrp new one outright), so either s/h or somewhere offering some kind of 0%. <sigh>
Once again, I have to stress: she's not interested in a seperates system. I tried, I really, honestly did, but she's a girl and they tend to like 'cute' over 'involving', 'style' over 'substance'... <sigh>

Don't beat yourself up over it too much. I recently helped a couple of chums buy a s/hand Classik (with Tuner) off Loot for £550. They think it's the best thing since sliced bread and are deliriously happy with it. It's transformed their music listening experience compared with their old stack system and is giving them a great deal of pleasure. I have to admit I'm quite impressed with it as well, particularly as they only have an old pair of Wharfedale Diamonds on loan from me.

My first hi-fi was a little Arcam system which would probably be slaughtered by the Linn Classik. It was a revalation compared to what I'd been using previously (a mini-system) though.
You never know, your sister might prefer the Classik to a system which contains (for example) a nasty plastic turntable and amps, all sitting on a wobbly tea trolley...

There was one on e-bay last week. No idea how much it went for though.
It went for £450 but it was the early model without the FM tuner

I'd have to say I'm with Jayd here. While the Classik is no doubt better than the Denon, if your sister is anything like mine she would keep the 200 £ and be happy ever after!

Given the lack of appropriate smily there, it would be fair to say that your last post was that of a tw**.

The Classik is amazingly good in music terms. A Jap box or boxes couldn't hope to compete at the price. The only area of weakness with the Classik is the bass.

My girlfriend recently bought a Classik. It sounds great! Counter to the whole Linn ethos, sh's using it with WdH snowtrack and Monitor Audio Silver S1's, but nevertheless she now listens to much more music!!
However, Onkyo used to produce an all-in-one solution that retailed for £550 and came with built in MD recorder. I used to sell it and to be honest, it was a cracker. I don't know if it's still in production, but it may be worth a look. Additionally, although I never listened to it, there was a smaller brother in the range without the MD and in a less fetching black (as opposed silver) which I think retailed for around about £300. May be worth checking out. These may not be flat-earth revolutionaries, but not everyone looks for this, no matter how much we might want them too

I agree with you. It's just that the Denon is a very decent system at about 1/5 of the price of a Classik - and we have to face that this is all some less crazy people ever need.

The thing is, if she goes the s/hand Classik route for 500 notes or so, she'll have something which will hold its value quite well and she can always resell or trade-in in a couple of years without losing much. Can you say the same for the Denon?
Plus I'd be surprised if the Denon sounds as good as the Linn or is as well built.

TC,
You are spoiling your sister. I bought a Classik for my London flat and it works very well indeed. It will give her years of pleasure!

I think you'll find there was and is a smiley after that post of mine. Remember I've heard TC's system and liked it, despite the plastic amps, turntable and wobbly tea trolley.
I particularily liked the plastic turntable in fact.
