Music you hate

Posted by: stephenjohn on 29 June 2006

I was listening to Radio 3 yesterday morning when they played a waltz. It nearly made me puke. All walttzes do that to me.

Oh and that sickly sweet pop muzak that I've spent 30 odd years trying to avoid so I dont know what it's called, it usually whines on about love of some sort. Also makes me nearly puke.

Any more for any more?

SJ,

Dunno.
I like Vince Guaraldi's 'The Great Pumpkin Waltz'.
I don't mind the tempo. I think what gets me is some chord progression.

All waltzes by Strauss gag me, for instance.
Also, I don't get on with polka.

Purely if it's a format that nauseates then Trad jazz does it for me.

Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, stuff like that. Also prog - ELP and Yes have me blowing chunks

Modern jazz of the 'look dad, no tunes' variety

Opera of the 'slaughter in a pet shop' variety

Everything and anything involving Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, collectively or separately

We haven't had a thread on which we can offend everybody for some time. I've always classified music in to that which like and that which I don't like. There is lots of music that I don't like (hate is a strong word), but rather than upset anybody by listing artist that I feel are as horrible as Phil Collins, I'll resit the temptation and simply post a nice song about musical taste ....

Give me Love, give me Can, give me Meatloaf
Give me Rush, give me Marquee Moon
Michael Ball or The Fall, I could listen to them all
In the twilight of the afternoon

Irk the purists, irk the purists, irk the purists its a right good laugh
Irk the purists, irk the purists, irk the purists at the back

Hall & Oates, Napalm Death, Miles Davis
Patti Smith, Simply Red, Sly Stone
Be they false or 4Real, I don't care and nor does Neil
So long as we can hear their songs

Irk the purists, irk the purists, it could well be an olympic sport
Irk the purists, irk the purists, if you've never then you ought

[break sung to Agadoo]

Husker Du Du Du, Captain Beefheart, ELO
Chris de Burgh, Sun Ra, Del Amitri, John Coltrane

Irk the purists, irk the purists, come on boy you know it feels so right
Irk the purists, irk the purists, irk the purists tonight

PS - Does anybody remember Alexi Sayle's Stuff where he walked about a music hall of fame and said how the music business was tragic - Jimi Hendrix: Dead, Jim Morrison: Dead, Janis Joplin: Dead, Phil Collins: Still Alive.

Really? Never saw you as a country fan Fredrik. I suppose the bumper stickers must be true then - if it aint country it aint music

I have never really liked Jazz - have almost made myself listen - but just sounds like one big warm up! - however my main hate in the wounderfull world of music - is the created POP! - in the 1970's at least we laughed - at liger Feet etc - but know mainly very good looking people with a small talent on dancing and NO talent singing! - and those high warbelling ear pearcing!! - Sorry to rant on... off for a sit down in a dark room Eek

Fantastic series. Do you remember the "arn't Dire Straits nice" monologue from the record shop?

A second vote for the world's ugliest millionaire, Andrew Lloyd Webber. Talk about taking a minimal talent the furthest possible distance.

Almost all what is nowadays called R&B (it is no such thing!) leaves me cold.

Almost anything "Commissioned by the BBC for the Proms" tends to make me want to withold my licence fee.

REM
Coldplay
Jethro Tull - flutes in rock music? I mean WHY?????

Late Bryan Adams stuff

And especially anything by Jon Bon Tempi since he had his hair cut and singlehandedly saved England by capturing an Enigma machine!!!!! Confused

Good call, although I would include everything he's ever done

I think I know what you meant, Fredrik.

These negative music threads are a waste of space!

Probably would've been fine if the thread title was prefaced with 'Grumpy Old Men ... Music You Hate'...

Why waste time hating something you never listen to?

Well if I never listen to it I can't hate it of course, but switch on R3 and there's the risk of encountering either modern jazz or weird opera; wander through a shopping precinct/mall and there's every chance of having one's eardums assaulted by Andrew Lloyd-Webber's 'tunes'.

Well, I listen to Planet Rock all day long at work.... the music I hate (and have listed) is the stuff which makes me want to change to a better station (impossible in my humble view) or turn the radio off.
Posted on: 30 June 2006 by Nigel Cavendish
Well do that then
Posted on: 30 June 2006 by Mike1380
No chance.

Would rather put up with 7 mins of music I loathe than:
a) Have silence at work
b) Run the risk of missing something I love coming on next.

Of course, if the inference is that when something irks me I should close my ears to that, and all which follows, then you probably aren't reading my response... Winker
