Music you hate
Posted by: stephenjohn on 29 June 2006
I was listening to Radio 3 yesterday morning when they played a waltz. It nearly made me puke. All walttzes do that to me.
Oh and that sickly sweet pop muzak that I've spent 30 odd years trying to avoid so I dont know what it's called, it usually whines on about love of some sort. Also makes me nearly puke.
Any more for any more?

Hi guys, am not on the forum a lot. Today I got a hint from someone saying I should check it out more often so I found some time now to do so... interesting subject this is
Work, 8 pets and listening to (rap..sorry) music keeps me pretty busy. Maybe I should re-introduce myself?
Anyway, interesting to see the likes and dislikes of people on music.. and to add one;
I truly dislike Classical and Opera.. house boy those three make me nerveus. And the jazz kind that goes a ting ting ting ya know the kind where everyone plays their instruments all at the same time but without a feel of sync?
God I am back on the forum after who knows how long and this is the first topic I pick to respond to.... I need to get a life

Every single piece? Not one of this vast assortment of different kinds of music has ever given you enjoyment? Perhaps you've not heard Leos Janacek's Sinfonietta or a similar stirring work of genius.
Oh well, everybody is entitled to hate something, in this nicest possible way.

I have to go for loathing "The Streets", though it seems to me to be more like bad poetry with a couple of bars of some kind of music in the background. I remember when I heard them being talked up by Radio 1 & XFM.
Modern plinky random sound Jazz, Soul, Pop Muzak and manufactered pap are other styles I dislike, oh, and Simply Red especially that song Fairground, irritates the hell out of me!
There's more but just thinking about Simply Red has irked me enough to not bother continuing!
Steve.

I'm with ROTF on this, definitely Phil Collins. I always descibe it as 'wallpaper music' as it has no depth and just occupies the background without actually being of any interest to anyone. It also frequently clashes with the carpets........as well as everything else!
I also do not 'get' Bruce Springsteen whose music I find cacophonic and unharmonious.

Ditto. And what about Michael Bolton whose every syllable of anguished wailing on track after track after track reminds me that there really is a hell.

I agree - Springsteen passes me by too - nice guy though by all accounts.

One thing that really does nothing for me is the pop singer who wails in a self-pitying way. An example for me is Travis in 'Why does it always rain on me?' Honestly the effect of some anoyance should have worn off before this was issued! Fred

You're in good company - Ravel didn't care for it either. Of course it's impossible to hear it since 1984 without thinking of Torvill and Dean.
My vote for a genre would have to go to white rap artists; though, worse, are the white middle-class rock critics who you know really hate rap but keep giving it 5-star reviews.
Personally I think Radiohead are the most over-rated band of the last decade, but then, what do I know?

Hey, you leave Michael Bolton alone. There aren't many singers who can put as much emotion and sincerity into a song as the God that is Michael Bolton.

I think a good measure of what is past it's sell-by date musically is what accompanies you around the local suoermarket.
This afternoon while picking up some provisions between stops, I was treated to Whiter Shade Of Pale around Asda's "Really exoctic foreign food that we don't know what to do with" aisle (rice, dried pasta and Mexican Taco "kits"), followed around by a guy whistling along to it, with a quaint little vibrato in all the right places.
One of those songs I used to like 30 years ago, but couldn't see myself sitting through now without it affecting me mentally, which might explain my current disturbed state of mind and my denfence of MB above. And before someone points it out, yes, I do know that it's based on blah blah blah.....

So you don't like the wonderful music of Planxty, Altan, Solas and Garda to name but a few. You are missing out on some of the greatest records around. Oh well - please don't say you like Phil Collins.

He speaks very highly of you.
I don't hate any music. Some I prefer not to listen to. There is one instrument that grates - pan pipes.
Steve.

I can't believe it.
. I love country and western, Bach, Beethoven et all and Rap-Hip- Hop,
Can't say anything about Phil Collins...whom I've never met and have nothing against..Also love Spingsteen's music and as for white rappers try Eminim's "Encore" for a truly overwhelming auditory experience...as far as Pan Pipes...okay..I've got to draw the line somewhere.....

I shouldn't think the wrath of a few forum members keeps him awake in his Chateau/Private Plane/Yacht/Ski Lodge etc.

Sitting in his ski lodge must really help to focus his mind when writing heartfelt songs about the plight of the homeless.

He could write a song about this
During a trip to the Paléo Festival in Nyon, a man fell in love with his interpreter, lets call her Orianne. The man sent his wife a fax, asking for a divorce.
In the sercond verse the couple live in Hermance in the chic suburb of Geneva, before moving to Bugnins in the canton of Vaud. where they live with their two children.
Later they marry at the Beau-Rivage Palace of Ouchy in Lausanne, during a grand ceremony with over 320 select guests: Eric Clapton, Elton John and Eric Knopfler were all present for the festivities that went on for three days and cost over 1.2 million Swiss franc.
And you say say he can't write heartfelt songs about the plight of the homeless.
Why can't he be like that nice Noel Gallagher, who he seems to dislike. In fact he was quite rude about Oasis (see Collins Slams Oasis) when I though Noel put his argument quite succinctly and articulately.

I don't know why I'm doing this, given that I don't own a Phil Collins album. Unless you count Genesis' Seconds Out.
But singing about people less fortunate than him (or us) - errr, that makes him different to how many wealthy singer/songwriters/authors/poets?
Except, of course that he's been rather successful at it.
Or do you think that to write legitimate songs about the plight of the homeless, you have to be one? Could be a while before we hear the next one as recording studios are not famous for inviting people in without charge.
BB King still sings about being skint - like he'd know? Doesn't mean people like him any less.
Or is it that you just don't like Phil Collins?
Regards,
Steve.
