NAIM HDCD RECORDINGS?
Posted by: Chayro on 19 September 2005
I'm a bit surprised that Naim doesn't record using HDCD when they seem so hot on it for their CD players. I understand that Naim likes the PM chip for sonic reasons other than HDCD, but, as long as it's there, why not? Not that Naim recordings are lacking - they are among the best recordings i've heard.

I think you've answered your own question. I suspect naim don't use HDCD mastering equipment because, unlike the playback equipment in their cd players, the think the conventional stuff sounds better.

I suspect also that Naim don't feel the need to contribute to Bill Gates' bullion hoard.

Forgot HDCD was owned by the dark empire - that's good enough reason for me never to want to use it - does it crash CD players.

Actually, it's rather good. It doesn't crash Naim CD players, but I wouldn't try one in a Microsoft player, assuming that such a thing existed.

Doesn't the mere inclusion of the chip fund Bill Gates?

Tam - Do you really need MS office? Pages is much nicer than Word - though not as good as Word Perfect 4.1 on my Amiga. Keynote is vastly superior to PowerPoint. I use these for all my documents and presentations and never have problems exchanging files with those who still use products from the dark empire. If you need an office clone then NeoOffice (Open Office for OS X) is free and will do that job for you. Sorry. I'll just jump off my soapbox.

Word is a pretty good app in my opinion. I haven't really used pages (I used to use appleworks, back on version 5 but it wasn't that good). Entourage is much more powerful than mail and has good hotmail integration (which is pretty important to me). I also have it because I sometimes need excel (which was essential to me during my degree) and powerpoint.
Like I say, on the mac it's actually not a bad app.

Hi Tam
Fair enough - I have used Word on a Mac and PC (I was forced to), I don't share your view that it is good app. Apple's new suite (iWork/iLife) still lacks a spreadsheet, but I'm sure they'll put that right during this year.
My view is coloured true - probably by the times a PC with MS apps has let me down - while my Mac just keeps on working. Consequently, I detest Gates, his company and his products. I've always found MS customer service diabolical. I've had clients who Microsoft have agreed to meet and then the MS people didn't show. Once, we had a MS person try to tell us about Active Directory and it was clear he didn't understand it himself (perhaps us wearing red hats put him off
).
However, I do agree the guys in the Mactopia section are not so bad and Office for the Mac is superior to the PC version (I guess building it on an OS that uses memory allocation properly rather than Windoze helps).
Oh well rant over - just frustrated that if I buy a HDCD that he gets money from it.
All the best

Hi,
Only just saw this.
Chayro is right, we think that our way of recording CDs produces really good results, and we're happy with that!

Agree totally - the naim CDs are some of the best recorded ones in my col;ection.
Even the MP3 samples you release seem incredibly good.

Yes but, given that Naim CDPs play back HDCD CDs, how would Naim HDCD encoded CDs sound?
