Buggered ProAcs

Posted by: Greg Beatty on 13 January 2002

Well, its semi-official now. My ProAc Response 2 speakers are buggered!!!

System just wasn't working right - vocals sounded "cupped" and the usual ProAc scale was lacking.

I drove 2+ hours and had the local ProAc dealer (for over 20 years) give 'em a listen.

His comment: "Have you considered using them as firewood?"

So they are off to ProAc for a looksee to see if they are salvagable. If not, I will be speaker shopping.

I've followed Tony's thread on speakers for his Nait with interest. I would like wall-huggers and am leaning towards the Katans. Of course, this is only if my ProAcs can't be fixed up.

What the hell happened to them?

Unless you blew them or are Mr. Tibbs, I've never heard of speakers suddenly going bad.

cheers

I have a friend who managed to blow his tweeters. As well as sounding very dull, there were very noticeable ringing effects at certain frequencies.

I don't know if the same can happen with a mid(/bass) driver?

Otherwise, I would assume that you've blown something on the crossover.

cheers, Martin

When I bought the speakers 3+ years ago, they had huge scale and could put voices "in the room". Really good stuff.

Lately, they have sounded shut in and vocals have a "cupped hands" sound. This is from both speakers.

Forum readers may know that I have been fighting with this for a while and recently dumped all my Naim kit. Turns out the speakers sound shut in and harsh even with muy expensivo tube electronics!

The dealer said he has heard this happen to proacs several times but he has never heard of it happening to both speakers. Very odd.

With the change of kit, change of house, divorce, marriage, etc., it has been hard to notice just what's going on with the speakers. Both drivers are working in both speakers, but he said that doesn't rule out voice coil failure or buggered crossovers.

I *do* know that it is very easy to hook up expensive kit to speakers such as these, hear a small improvement, and seriously wonder if the cost is worth it. Led me astray.
