Some j*** recomendations please

Posted by: Longman on 16 March 2008

I have recently added a couple of Jazz albums to my collection . This was triggered by a spontanious purchase at a car boot sale of an immaculate first pressing of Dave Brubecks greatest hits album . Something told me I knew the track " take five " and as it was only 50p I bought it . When I got it home I found that I loved it , and the sound quaity was amzing . I have since bought an original copy of the album take five ( columbian 6 eye ) and also added Miles davis " Kind of blue " album , also columbian 6 eye . This is just a phenominal album that I have shoved down the throats of anyone who comes to stay at our house !

Anyway , what I am after now are some other recomendations of similiar jazz albums

Regards

Steve

Crescent is my favourite Coltrane album. Well worth checking out.

If you are looking for quality european jazz , I would strongly recommend The Ground by Tord Gustavsen Trio and Being There by Tord Gustavsen Trio. Both great albums and great recording quality, even better on Naim.

Sticking with Cannonball - Inside Straight and also The Country Preacher are two excellent albums. Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay is also quite excellent IMHO.

Second that wonderful Miles soundtrack recording for the french film--very atmospheric and great playing by Barney Wilen on tenor too. Also Crescent is an accessible, a superb Trane album. As far as Love Supreme, for me that was the beginning of the end in Trane listening. Just my opinion, but Love Supreme has been way overrated ever since it appeared. I'm sure this is a distinctly minority opinion.......

Another brilliant artist to try is Charles Mingus, but you should start with Ah Um, then Tijuana Moods and go from there. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is one of his most brilliant albums but also a liitle more abstract (IMV) so you should probably leave that for later.

Mingus is brilliant, and I highly recommend his two volume set Changes, one of his best and quite accessible.

All best,
Fred

Will definitely have to get my hands on these in that case - everything I have heard from him so far has been nothing short of excellent. He's a bit like Thelonious Monk in that respect.

Thanks.

I've now managed to get copies of both Changes One & Two and One is indeed a superb album - thanks for the recommendation.

You're welcome. Didn't care for Two?

I've only just got Two and will be checking it out this weekend. But I'm sure I will like it as well - I've not so far heard any Mingus album that I didn't like.

I'm sure you'll dig it if you like One ... it's all from the same recording session.

Best,
Fred

I don't get on with Coltrane, Miles or Mingus, too edgy.

I like the singers like Ella, Sarah, Etta, Nina and Billie.

I certainly do - it's gorgeous (as seems to be just about everything he produced).

Try Coltrane's Ballads and Miles' Kind Of Blue ... not edgy at all.

All best,
