Another REL set-up question

Posted by: i am simon 2 on 05 January 2004

I recieved a REL Quake for my Birthday from my better half, and so far I have connected it into my home cinema system via the low level input, which works well, but I I would like to try the high level input from the speaker terminals via the neutrix Speakon plug.

The Quake is not supplied with the plug and lead, so I was going to make one, but I have a few questions.

1 What is the pin configeration of the plug on the Rel?

2 What is the correct Neutrix plug to buy if there is more than one?

3 Is the rel recomended set up of using one negative speaker terminal, and both positve terminals suitable for a naim set up? Does this not short the two chanels together giving you mono or are they kept seperate somehow?

4 What sort of speaker cable should be used?

I was going to use the speaker end rather than the naim amp end as recomended elseware on the forum.

Any other advise would be appreciated.

On questions 1 & 2 I would advise you to contact REL and ask. My QUAKE came with the neutrix coonnector which already had a length of 3 core color coded cable attached. The Neutix plug has 4 terminals but only uses 3 so I willlook to see how the plug is wired when I get home this evening & let you know).
On question 3 the wiring is correct as described. Basically you need both +'s to deliver each of the channel signals but you only need one - connection as a signal return becuse it is effectively to "ground".
On question 4 the 3 core cable supplied by REL is pretty light weight like low voltage lighting cable. I personally went 1/2 way by substituting some proper sepaker cable BUT did not use NACA5. Simply put you are only reproducing the very lowest frequencies so it looks like REL's attitude is you don't need high grade sepaker cable like you would for a full range signal.
The idea od wiring up at the speaker ends is good in my opinion. That's waht I ended up doing.

On the any other advise thing. Basically keep the "roll in" frequency as low as you can. My speakers are quoted to have a -3db point of 28Hz and I ended up setting the QUAKE at approxm 26Hz. Anything higher than that was just adding on-top of sound output from the main speakers and could be heardin listening tests. The other thing is to keep the gain setting at as low a setting as possible. Basically again if you are up close to the sub when listening you can hear when you have overdone it. I was running at about 9-10 o'clock.
