Naim Uniti and receiving BBC Radio *abroad* via wifi - help.
Posted by: Dinarius on 03 February 2010
Two days ago (late February 1, to be precise) my dealer set up my new Uniti including setting up the wifi connection to my wireless modem.
Immediately, I could receive BBC Radio 3/4/World Service.
I could also receive the repeats available via these channels (e.g. CD Review on Radio 3)
However, since yesterday morning, I can only receive the BBC World Service.
Doing some serching on the BBC website, I came across this thread which indicates that I am not alone:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbipl...t=91916591#p91916591It seems that BBC are changing the way they make live radio available.
This BBC blog may be of use too.......
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/rad...edia_an_update.shtmlI presume that Naim are aware of this? If so, will there be a firmware upgrade to deal with the problem for those of us not living in the UK?
Is there a setting I can change?
Many thanks.
D.
ps. Please note:
1. This is not a wireless connection issue. I can receive all the other channels that appear on the Uniti's display - at least those that I've tried - including the World Service, as I wrote above.
2. I'm having exactly the same problem with my iPhone. Using the app FStream, it receives everything except BBC.
3. Using the BBC's iPlayer on my computer, I can receive all BBC channels via the same wireless connection.

I think this is a wider problem - I see exactly the same problem here in the UK.
Either the Uniti can't cope with the new format BBC streams or there is an issue with the way VTuner advertises the streams.
Hopefully VTuner can fix this quickly - if a Uniti software fix is required then be prepared to wait...

All stations are back again now.
I can only assume that, when they're testing the new system, the old one is unavailable.
Here's a quote from the above blog which seems to indicate that the switch off date for national stations is March, 30, 2010.
"National networks
It was clear that we could easily plan for a migration period for National networks during which RealMedia and alternatives will be available and allow for our audience and third-parties to make changes in a reasonable period.
So we'll be phasing out RealMedia by 30 March, 2010 for National networks.
In order to improve the experience in the BBC iPlayer web interface, we'll change the lower bandwidth option from its current RealMedia offering to a new Flash offering at 48kbps. We hope for this to be completed in October.
The legacy RealMedia streams will continue to exist on our systems until the March deadline, so that it gives those who still use them time to migrate to using the alternative:
* Windows Media for Live streams - available globally for these services
* Windows Media for Listen Again streams - will phase in over the next few months and be available globally."
Presumably, therefore, service will be on and off between now and then.
Whatever the issue, I sincerely hope that a fix is found for the Uniti. It's one of the main reasons I bought one.
Right now I'm listening to Radio 3 through a pair of ATC SCM 40s and astonishing it is too.
This strikes me as a classic case of Auntie fixing something that ain't broke. Pity.

We do not know of any issue with BBC and Vtuner but we will investigate, we believe that due to licensing the BBC block overseas IP addresses

That is certainly the case with live football matches on BBC Radio 5Live and Test Match Special. I cannot receive either via the internet.
But, Radios 3 and 4 are available on the internet without interruption via the BBC's iPlayer. So, I would have thought that the same would apply to the stream to my Uniti.
Many, many thanks for taking the time to reply.
D.
ps. My iPhone's availability of reception mirrors that of the Uniti exactly.

....no they don't but some content is not available overseas. This has never ever affected me on radios 3 or 4.

Yes, back and working now.
Checking the stream info for BBC Radio 1 (first in the list - not preference!) shows that this is WMA. Not sure if this was also the case before the outage?

Just checked the stream info, 1,2,4 and 5 all showing as WMA streams.
Steven - Just to back up Dinarius, the BBC do block some live sports coverage, everything else is available outside the UK.
Nick.

Are you people not accessing the AAC streams? These are much better than WMA in the UK and usefully better outside the UK (the BBC presents a lower bitrate for out of UK)

I am happy to choose the highest quality stream available, however Naim's Vtuner site presents two streams for most of the BBC channels and on a not very scientific test of just Radio 1, these were both WMA.

How do you access the AAC streams other than by using the BBC iPlayer? Do have the URLs for Radios 3 & 4?

Via the IPlayer plug-in for Squeezebox. I don't know if it's possible to access them directly. The Uniti doesn't have this fuctionality then?

Quite probably not. AIUI the AAC streams are wrapped in some kind of Flash so it is quite possible that the Uniti can't decode them, but I wanted to try by manually adding the URLs to Vtuner.
Maybe someone from Naim could advise what can be done

So, you can't get the last 7 days BBC programs on demand either? I'd miss an awfull lot if I had a Uniti!
