Is it the Joshua Tree?
Posted on: 02 December 2006 by JohnMak
I'm with Johno 13 .... U2 IMHO are a the most truely abysmal band I have ever heard. As a New Zealander I bought one of their albums (One Tree Hill) to try and understand why they had ever become famous. What a waste of money.
"Bono", "The Edge" what sort of pretentious wankers you would have to be to give yourselves names like that .. especially when you can't play and instrument or sing in anything other than a bag-pipe drone. ..... Oh yes .... you could call your self "Sting" and be that sort of pretentious, poseur wanker.
Whatever happened to musicians who can actually play their instruments?

I like does not mean these are good
I do not like does not mean these are crap.
What ever happened to forum members who could be subjective

Have to be October for me - quite old but very good and from the time before they were a stadium band. I remember having this on one side of a C90 and Simple Minds 'New Gold Dream' on the other - got a lot of play that tape.
Always thought The Edge a half decent guitarist with an unusual sound. Obviously there's a lot of effects going on but the band get a pretty big sound considering they are effectively a 3 piece.
As for Sting - I seem to remember he was named this by others due to a favourite black and yellow jumper he used to wear at early gigs.
Matt.

It was fashionable in all of the 'hifi press' back then to slag off production etc on U2 albums on vinyl release.
Even on Linn system I liked them/recorded them.
I do recommend buying everything on cheap CD/downloading all of the unreleased rarities.
IMO with Elvis Costello they are the most underrated deliverers of sounds/occasional media reportage.
The first time I heard U2 was when I was sat down by a friend who played 1st 3 vinyl LPs on Rega Planar 3 (with old silver S-arm)/Dynavector 10 etc probably through Nytech amp./ARC loudspeaker system. Probably that apart from hype in audio comix spurred me into buying 1st LP12.
I never bought 1st 3 albums until 2 years ago on CD, but bought their vinyls after 1st 3 until 1990. One day I shall buy 3 1990s albums on CD. I have bought their stuff since 2000+ on CD.
Like a saddo I avidly hunt/download legally their unreleased songs.
I like Joshua Tree, and my 21 & 19 year old children often play CDR thereof.
Possibly there is some element of mysticism involved in 'engineered' vinyl-certain earlier U2 recordings ...

Joshua Tree
It's been asked in the above replies but no one has answered.... are there any decent remastered cds available? I've only ever heard Joshua Tree sound anywhere near half decent and that was on a LP12. I don't have a tt.

I think that Boy is the best album.
Joshua Tree has 2 better tracks but it it lacks the raw simplicity of Boy - and the rest is coffee table stuff.
The more recent work is ok but it doesn't quite cut it.

Max; Thank you for explaining the terrible sound U2 has when played on my Naim system. It sounds very compressed with limited soundstage or air ...appears encapsulated in a tube....hard to enjoy. To date U2 are the only band that sounds awful on my system. Whereas most CDs come to life and amaze me with detail etc. I don't believe a contributor to this site ever got a response as to if there are any remastered U2 Cds available. Anyone have any input re: RM U2. ?

October and The Unforgettable Fire.
Then War, and then Joshua Tree.

I've only one U2 LP in my collection, All that you can't leave behind. Extremely boring music and extremely bad sound.
