The Song Remains the Same - Remastered

Posted by: Clive B on 01 December 2007

Having made some very favourable comments on this album on the "Mothership" thread, I have now been able to give it a bit more of an extended listen. Although I still say the remastering is excellent, giving this a far more credible sound quality, I would advise that it is different to the original version. This is basically the warts and all version without the overdubs which Jimmy Page made to the original to clean it up. OK, it's not a major issue, but if you've listened to the original as much as I have it comes as a bit of a surprise. I won't say 'disappointment' or 'shock' since I believe the remastered version is what you hear on the soundtrack. The trouble is that I grew up with the original version; I bought it on vinyl the day it came out, saw the film the day after the premiere, bought the BetaMax video, the CD, the VHS video, the DVD and now the remaster. I even copied the 27 minute version of 'Dazed and Confused' at half-speed in order to learn the guitar part note for note. Now I suppose I just need to buy the blue ray DVD and a machine to play it on, and the 200g vinyl copy when it comes out.

But I'd still wish Pagey had remastered the original with the overdubs.

Regards,
CB

"i cant help thinking it would be nice to see a pure concert dvd of this, i'm sure there could be a market for this ?"

I was hoping that this was what the remastered DVD was going to be, a pure concert, without all the now outdated bits that for me, spoil the concert, maybe next time!
Oh and complete and in original order, come on Pagey!!

Why do you wait so eagerly for this remastering, when the whole catalogue has already been recently done superbly by Classic Records.

Count.d, sorry if I've misunderstood but this is much more than a remaster. It's a whole new album, with six more tracks on top of the original nine, and the sound quality is vastly superior (to the original album and cd at any rate - I've never heard the Classic Records version).

Sorry if I'm being dim, but i thought the furore about these releases were to do with the classic 200g pressings. Is this a diferent release?

yes this is a different release.
this will be a 4lp box set as opposed to a double lp, this version contains all the tracks whereas the double albim just had some of them, where is black dog or the ocean for instance.

I agree that a straight concert DVD would be fantastic but I read recently that for copyright reasons they are not allowed to touch the video But they could enhance the audio of the original release and this has been done fantastically well.

I heard it was copyright too, I'm sure they could find a way round it to release a complete concert DVD rather than a film. Ah well, we will just have to keep wishing for now!
