Charlie Haden & Antonio Forcione - Heartplay

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 06 November 2006

I bought this CD recently and after a couple of playings was distinctly underwhelmed. On further acquaintance, I have changed my mind. It's a really excellent record. The mutual understnding between the two players is very tangible. It's a record you really need to focus on, as it's very subtle - perhaps that's where I went wrong previously.

As is so often the case, the best records can require perseverence.

Nigel - funny, I read your inital review after ordering my copy. When I first listened, I agreed - "New age noodling" I think you said. I think I was expecting something else at first, because after I knew what to expect, I began listening deeper into the content and, like you, I've changed my mind as to it's musical merit.

Charlie's playing is like an orchestra. He creates melodies and phrases, as opposed to just supporting the soloist, although, support is a good thing too. Anyway, it's good stuff when you want to just do some listening.
