nVi background noises

Posted by: gone on 21 November 2007

I'm settling in with my nVi and what a good picture/sound - even running a 5 metre HDMI cable to the display.
For the sound, I'm running the signal through a unity gain input on the 552, and everything works well except .... there seem to be some low-level background noises, related to disk access/search, which breaks through to the speakers. Obviously with a unity gain input, it'll pick up anything louder than a gnat's sneeze but does anyone else have this issue? Is it related to grounding or cabling?
Cheers

Hi John,

This is quite a common issue with AV processor -> 2 channel setups using unity gain settings.

Usually suspects are:-

-cables dangling near equiptment that is radiating RF

-interconnect cable type/length (excessive lengths differ in capacitance/inductance etc)

-earth loop issues from other sources, dependant on how your inputs are connected at processor and pre-amp ends

The first diagnosis step is to reduce the system to only n-Vi -> preamp -> amps/PS -> speakers, with no other sources/aerial connections etc connected. Does the issue still occur?

If it doesn't occur gradually add sources/aerial etc and see when the problem re-occurs

If it still occurs, try a "slugged" interconnect, available from your dealer (or get your dealer to modify your existing lead). This lead should contain 22ohm resistors at the source end of the 5:5 cable in the signal path (L/R).

well, there's a bit to be going on with. I'll try a few suggestions and report back - sounds like it's fixable
Thanks
