Active SBL's with 250 & 135's

Posted by: Lloydy on 09 February 2001

Probably the oldest subject in the world, but has anybody tried going active using a pair of 135's and a single 250 driving SBL's? The rest of my kit is 52, with Roksan DP1/DA1/DS4 CD (can I say that?) and Linn LP12.
Thanks

But the perceived wisdom is 135s on the tweeters.

Thanks for your reply Andy, you say you are not using 250 + 135's but the recommendation to use 135's on the tweeters would seem to be the reverse to the most logical connection. A friend of mine who works for a dealer in South Wales seemed to think 250 to the tweeters but I don't think he had tried this combination. Can you explain your suggestion.
Thanks!

You want the better amp on the tweeters as that's where all the detail is in the sound. Essentially, the amps are not shifting current into the tweeters but are providing a stable voltage across them. The crosstalk inherent in the 250 (the channels share a transformer) means that you get some leakage across the channels distorting.

The lower registers really want current to move the bass drivers and whilst a pair of 135s would be better, a 250 does the job perfectly adequately.

At least that's my understanding wink

You can do this but it requires a revision to the SNAXO crossover. The standard SNAXO configuration would suggest one 250 runs the woof and tweet of one speaker. You want horizontal biamping configuration so that you can use a single 250 for both woofers. This is not difficult (requires minor soldering) but you need a good job or you degrade the performance.
Definitely run the 135s on the tweeters. I've tested it myself to verify what was recommended and it sounds best.
You should have an excellent result. I did find a much better result yet when I had 2 250s configured to mono ("125") and a pair of 135s. This is the same cost as 135s but if you have a 250 and a pair of 135s then you only need another 250. This may or may not be relevant to you but I mention it in case it is worth your consideration.

Lloydy,

At last a soul mate! We have the same CD player, although I send the transport back to Roksan for the 1.5 upgrade, very big improvement. I also use active IBL's ( 2x 250 ).

I always thought that the Roksan was good enough for the 52, & you obviously think that it is. What make of coax link from transport to DAC do you use? I tried loads & ended up with an Audioquest one.

Good luck with the active issue.

Bob.

Thanks everyone for your help on my 135/250 question. I've just got to wait patiently now for my dealer to come and set up the equipment so that I can hear the improvements!

Bob,
Yes, I fell in love with the Roksan CD player when I heard it at the Ramada show back in 1992. My player is still the original spec although I did have the mod done to the lid to make it quieter and smoother in action.
Do Roksan still offer the upgrade to 1.5?
I use XLO Signature cable between the transport and DAC, and I switch between XLO Signature and Chord Solid 2 between the DAC and the amps.
I also power the DAC with a DS4 power supply.
The sound is excellent!
What do you think of your Audioquest cable? I too tried a lot of different makes including Roksans own.
