Has anyone got this album? Does anyone else think that it's a full-on masterpiece?

I've you mean Don't bring me Down then yes this is in my top 10 all time albums.
I also happen to think their first two are quite superb.

As far as I know (and I could well be wrong) Dexy's only did three 'proper' albums
Searching for the Young Soul Rebels
Too Rye Aye
Don't stand me down.
All are superb.
So yes I do mean 'Too Rye Aye' apart from the obvious 'Come on Eileen' and 'JAckie wilson says' which are OK tracks but none representative of this album, the rest is a soulful masterpiece: Old, Plan B, Liars A to E in fact all of it is superb. Kevin's voice is a thing of beauty.
Unfortunately if KR's next solo album is anything like his last (the one with him dressed as a girl on the front) then I won't be touching it with a barge pole, as this one is a kareoke disaster and such a waste. I was one of the couple of hundred people who actaully bought this debarcle

I'd been trying to get hold of the said 'dressed in womens's clothes debacle' but maybe I should give up my search now i've heard it's crap!
I read somewhere that it only sold about 700 copies? Are there any decent tracks on it at all?
I've been avoiding 'too rye aye' because I can't abide 'come on eileen', but come to think of it I have heard the tracks you mention + they are v.fine
I'm so into 'don't stand me down' at the moment.
To me this is just what music should be about, it's such a wayward, passionate album. It's all brilliant but 'this is what she's like' and 'reminisce part 2' completely blow me away.
I find it difficult to think of a cd I love more!

I have about 550 CDs, of which, 3 are by the delightful Sarah.
I always play her in a heavy session but I do like a bit of variety.

I have done an on line search for "Don't bring me down" and there appears to be two versions.
One is in a grey cover with 2 men in 1930's style clothing on it.
The second is a cover with 3 people walking across a field.
Which one do I go for ?

If I were buying I would buy the recent issue, the three people in a field version.
And the earlier reissue may not be available new anymore.

Go for the three people in a field.
It's a better re-master + includes a free DVD which has the full video of 'this is what she's like'.
cheers

Sorry not been on the forum for a while.
Don't Stand me Down has I believe existed in 3 versions.
The original 1985 release (I don't have)
The 1996 Reissue - This is the one I have and it has the 2 blokes in the suit on the front (the 3 walking accros a field is on the back. Now this version was remixed/remastered from the original, and has 2 extra tracks (making 9 in total) now these extra tracks are OK but non essential (IMO). It also has notes on each track by Kevin.
The latest issue. Now the latest issue has been remixed again to more resemble the original mix. (I don't know if it's exactly the same or just different again) Kevin Rowland decided he prefered the original mix to the 1996 one. I cannot comment on which is better (I'm not one for buying multiple versions of things) I just know I love the one I have.
Nickc
Too-Rye-Ay is definately worth getting. There are (IMO) 6 corking tracks (out of 10).
Unfortunately the same can not be said of 'My Beauty'. This is a cover versions album, now that's not necessarily a problem but the track selection is such that all the tracks are very well known, the arrangements are OTT, more Bing Crosby than Dexy's.
Track list:-
The Greatest Love of All
Rag Doll
Concrete and Clay
Daydream Believer
This Guy's in Love with You
The long and winding road
It's getting Better
I can't tell the bottom from the top
Labelled with Love
Reflections of my Life
You'll never walk alone.
It's the kind of album you might expect a Gareth Gates, Robson and Jerome, Donny Osmond to come up with (all be it with a lot more charismatic voice)

Don't Stand me down.
I really hope you like this ALbum, but it does seem to polarise opinion somewhat. It does not contain the upbeat chipper songs like 'Come on eileen' and so was a big dissapointment to many. 'Come on Eileen' being a huge single, this album was a shock to the system.
What it does contain is some of the most emotional and passionate tracks I've ever heard. If you like it, you may well love it.

This CD arrived in yesterday mornings post, but I did not have time to play it until 2.00am today after returning home from a business meeting.
I was tired and ready for bed but I thought I would give the CD a spin before retiring.
It really is a brilliant CD, so emotive, it almost made me a pinko loving softie.
I really do think, everyone should have a copy of this one.
Mine is the 1997 remaster of the 1986 version.
Two men on the front cover and two men and a woman on the back.
A great bit of music.
Regards

Glad you liked it Mick.
You're right, everyone should get a copy.
There must be a lot of people who only associate Dexys with 'Come on Eileen' or can't quite make it past the 'ivy league' look. It's a shame because music this special doesn't come along very often.
I take it you've got 'searching for the young soul rebels'?

Great to hear you like this Mick.
As said previously I too think this is a magnificent album.
You must also get Too-Rye-Ay (and you Nick), if you haven'y already, because although it has Come on Eileen, it also has some stunning tracks.

Ok. Ok. you win. i'll get it!
(I picked up the greatest hits CD for £2.99 a few months ago and it has some of the tracks on it already but for the sake of being complete...)
N.B. 'My Beauty' Given it several listens now.
It's a kind of 'Kevin Rowland excorcising his demons through the singing of crass popular songs' isn't it? Not exactly a pleasurable experience but I am rather taken with 'Ragdoll' for some reason!

I also think rag doll is probably the best of the bunch.
To Rye Ay:
All the slightly more downbeat and soulful tracks on this album are well worth having:
i.e
Lets make this precious
All in All
Old
Plan B
I'll show you
Liars A to E
Until I believe in my soul.
If you have all (or most of) these on your greatest hits then maybe don't bother, but otherwise you should get a copy
