scratched cds2
Posted by: davidf on 11 September 2002
need advice: my cds2 plexigass ( or is it glass) top portion that closes over the cd compartment has become scratched. It works fine but being neurotic I would like it to look perfect. Is this something that can easily be replaced by NANA or for that matter is it something I could do myself if NANA sent me the part. thanks in advance, david

The whole lid assmbly is quite tricky to fit, I suggest nana would be the route, the part is quite expensive so you may wish to explore some of the hi-tech cleaners for plastics.

thanks shareza and paul. It is not so bad that I would send it back to NANA or pay big bucks, but a cleaner would be something I would try. I cannot imagine that a cleaner would take out superficial scratches, would it? Does anyone know the name of something I could use. I have to believe that brasso would scratch the surface, wouldnt it? regards, david.

David
I used to polish perspex when I was an apprentice in the aircraft industry.
We used brasso by the bucket load.
Brasso really does cover up scratches by polishing and disguising them. but I would be worried by the black finish. It is possible that the brazzo could remove the black finish if it is sprayed on.
If the perspex is black throughout its structure then you will be ok.
Regards
Mick

There is a product called 'Mer' that works very well and is less abrasive than Brasso.
good luck, Dev

Dev, thanks for the input. Can you be more specific about this product. What is it made for and have you known anyone to use it? Also, where would one buy this product? Has anyone used it on their cds 2 lid? Let me know. david.

Novus comes in 3 types for:
1. Nasty scratches
2. Minor scratches (probably yours)
3. Surface polisher.
Here in the U.S. one of its most popular domestic uses is for the care of motorcycle windshields. This is actually a better test than first blush might suggest because at night and at speed it is *critical* that your windshield is not scratched.
Any company dealing in plexiglass or Lexan products will sell it. Over here I get it from my local Harley dealer and no, I don't have one of those paintshakers ;-)

If you're going to try any of these cleaners I'd strongly recommend fitting all the transit bolts (inside transport & underneath).
Some of the parts are only held in place by gravity, and can even be knocked out of place.
cheers, Martin

I have got to be honest, I am reluctant to try anything until I hear from Naim on the subject or hear from someone who has tried something that worked. NANA is not committing to any treatement and Naim UK whom I have emailed have not yet gotten back to me. Anyone out there ever done this? I must also say that if anyone saw my cds 2 they would think I am crazy as the couple of marks on the lid are barely visible. Thus is the mind of a neurotic madman! david

In my experience in trying to remove/hide scratches on plastic mirror finishes, nothing ever works if you are fussy. You are not removing the scratch, but moulding a new surface. You may use a cleaner to polish out very minor surface scratches, but if you polish too hard, the surface will take on a rippled finish which is just as bad as the original scratch.
If it bothers you, I would change the part and don't waste your time.
