SVS cylinder subwoofers for organ music and fiding a low level sub source from a '72?

Posted by: Nime on 29 February 2004

Hi,

Do we have any happy/unhappy SVS cylinder subwoofer users for stereo music listening only rather than AV? Since I can't audition one I'd really value opinions from those with some experience of their use in a Naim amped music system.

I am also seeking a way of extracting a line level output from my 72/180 to feed an active subwoofer a "low level" signal. Can a line level source be found in the recorder sockets if a suitable alternative cable is made up by Flashback? Or isn't that even necessary? I have never recorded off my '72 so am a bit vague on this aspect of the Naim DIN socketry. I presently use all my sockets for sources, not for recording.

My passion for classical organ music is sorely lacking interest since I dumped my passive subs and Kans. Frown

The only question for me now is which affordable sub I should buy. Not whether I should. I have narrowed it down to the SVS PCi 16-46. This looks like a perfect match between affordability and going really deep. And I don't care how big it is if it works well on music. Big Grin

Thanks

Hey, another organ fan,,, Oops, did I say that Big Grin

I must admit the ability to do some sort of justice to pipe organ, which is pretty much my fave instrument, was of significant concern when I bought my present speakers; SBL's. Just don't let anyone tell you they don't do bass, albeit not to the levels and especially extension that a pipe organ can produce, but then very few speakers can.

Hence my vascillation/deliberation about adding subs to the SBL's - still waiting for Naim!! Roll Eyes

I've certainly read very becomming comments re the SVS's for HT; I should imagine they'd do well with 2 channel. But surely someone here must have heard them? or can offer a more knowledgable opinion.

Thanks for that John.

My 753's start rolling off at 40 Hz. They sound nice enough but "nice" is simply not good enough for classical organ music.

I e-mailed Naim yesterday (Sunday) in the hope of a response to getting a line level output from my '72 to drive an active sub. Still waiting for a reply.

I was hoping to place an order for the biggest SVS cylinder subwoofer this morning. Nearly four feet high by 16" diameter 320W RMS & tuned to 16Hz! I just hope I don't need two.Big Grin

Very interesting post Andrew. Just the sort of thing I do occasionally.

I wish I could see the faces on some of the AV fora I belong to if they saw your post. There are many there who would laugh their socks off at the likelihood of the Strata ever reaching 30Hz with a following wind let alone your excellent 15Hz in room.

My passive subs ran flat from 20Hz to 120Hz (-3dB) at 100dB continuous. -7db @ 10Hz. The RadioShack/Tandy/Realistic analogue SPL meter I use has has a severe bass roll-off in its response. There are many online examples of correction figures. I quote the corrected figures for the response. The subs weren't supposed to be that good. I must have made a mistake somewhere in the construction. Big Grin

Richard from Naim headquarters has kindly brought me up to speed on a line-out source for a sub from Naim equipment. All I need is a Hicap to get 4 pre-outs apparently. Wouldn't do the sound quality any harm either I suspect. Would SWMBO notice I wonder? Smile
