A cap on top of a 250?

Posted by: leeto on 12 December 2002

Due to lack of tiers on my rack, I have my hicap sitting on top of the right side of my 250 so that both the 250 and hicap transformer are on the same side. Am I compromising a lot on sound quality with this arrangement?

Try to arrange it so the transformers are 90% out of phase and furthest apart.

Try putting the Hi-Cap on the floor (not carpet), if the leads will reach.

I would expect this to be better.

N.B. I first read 'cap' as 'cat' and thought you had an overheating 250 (and cat!)

my cat was on top of my 250 three minutes ago. I think she likes it cos it's warm.

Does this apply to toroids?

Putting them side by side or putting the hicap 90% rotated compared to the 250?

90% rotated compared to the 250?

It's a compromise. Putting the Hicap on the floor (or even on its side next to the 250!) will produce a different compromise which may be better. Try it, it's free, but someday get yourself another tier on your rack.

Oopss, I actually meant 90 deg rotated compared to the 250.

How do you make it 90% out of phase?
